(Special Screening) Ashfall - Entertaining and Surprisingly Fun Disaster Movie with Some Amazing Special Effects

It was a surprise for both of us when my wife got the invitation to the special screening of this movie few nights ago as I thought it would only be done in January 2020 prior to the scheduled release. However, we were obviously happy that we got the chance to see it before we went for our holiday. Anyway I will go straight to the movie now.

Brief Story Line

(TV SERIES) Carnival Row Season 1 - Slow Burner Fantasy Series with some Stunning Visual Effects

I saw the trailer to this series in one of the cable TV few weeks ago and finally gave it a go. It immediately intrigued me with the unusual looking creatures and the British classical period costumes plus the two well known names as the main leads. So let us get on with the series.

Brief Story Line

Set in the Victorian age fantasy world, a police detective in Republic of Burgue named Rycroft Philostrate aka Philo (Orlando Bloom - The Hobbits trilogy, Unlocked etc) had to solve a difficult case about the killing of a fae creature. As creatures were considered the lower end of society, most police did not care about the case. During his investigations, Philo met with a street performer named Millworthy (Simon McBurney - The Conjuring 2 etc) who would later provide some insights to him.

Imperfect - A Review by Yennymakanmulu

After seeing the trailer to this movie few times, my wife and I were definitely interested in seeing this. Not that we need any introduction anyway as it was written & directed by one of our favorite movie maker, Ernest Prakasa. So when yesterday the cinema website was updated and the studio near our home was showing the movie, we did not hesitate to buy the tickets for 7 PM. And how was the movie? I will let you know from the wonderful & amazing post my wife did below.

[MOVIE] Imperfect: Karir, Cinta & Timbangan

Awalnya ragu, hubby mau diajak apa nggak nonton pelem ini, tapi pas liat trailer Imperfect, keliatan kalo hubby tertarik. Gw lupa kalo karya Ernest Prakasa biasanya dia mau ikut nonton hahaha. Wow, duo dynamic yes.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - A Fun-filled Space Adventure & the Final Part of the Third Trilogy in Star Wars Saga

Despite having advance ticket sales available since last week for this movie, my wife and I had a bit of challenge to schedule it at our convenient time in the studio I prefer. And yesterday, when my favorite cinema finally released its schedule for the show, it was not available via online. So I decided to see this in the theater near our home at 6.50 PM, even though it was in a small studio with regular sound system. Well how was my experience then? Will provide more below.

Brief Story Line

Set after the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rey (Daisy Ridley - Peter Rabbit, Ophelia etc) was still learning to become better Jedi as Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) believed she could be. Meanwhile Poe (Oscar Isaac - The Addams Family 2019 version, A Most Violent Year etc), Finn (John Boyega - Pacific Rim: Uprising, Detroit etc), Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and C3PO (Anthony Daniels) were still fighting for the Resistance.

(2019) Black Christmas - A Disappointing Failed Attempt in Reviving the Slasher Genre

This movie's trailer was already shown many times before and I was getting familiar after watching it several times. As it was released while I was away on business trip, I only saw this with my wife last night though it was a bit more challenging than I expected as not a lot of theaters were showing it. The film itself was shown the same day as in the US so it's pretty brand new. OK let us get started with the movie.

Brief Story Line

In Hawthorne university, a group of college students including Riley (Imogen Poots - 28 Weeks Later, Need for Speed etc) and some of her MKE sorority sisters Kris (Aleyse Shannon), Marty (Lily Donoghue) and Jesse (Brittany O'Grady - Star TV series etc) stayed over during the Christmas holiday at their sorority house.

Knives Out - Intriguing, Interesting, Entertaining and Greatly Done Murder Mystery Movie

After two weeks of only showing at midnight during the weekend, finally this movie was released yesterday (a bit weird as it was done on Tuesday as opposed to its customary Wednesday release). As it happened, it was shown at the theater near our home at 6.20 PM, so without any hesitation my wife bought the tickets for us. Well we shall go on with this movie then.

Last Christmas - A Bit Lacking in Chemistry & Predictable Rom-com Aided by Some Lovely Songs that Fans of George Michael Would Love

My wife and I had been eyeing to see this rom-com Christmas movie with the title that was based on one of the most popular Christmas song and a personal favorite of my wife and mine. It was a bit late for Indonesian audience as it was released only on Friday (around a month after its US and UK release). And sadly it did not play at the reasonable time in the theater near our home, so we only got to see it today. Well let's get on with it now.

Brief Story Line

Story focused on a young woman named Katarina who referred to herself as Kate (Emilia Clarke - Solo: A Star Wars Story, Terminator Genisys etc), a rather self-pitying person who was working at a Christmas ornaments shop owned by a lady named Santa (Michelle Yeoh - Master Z: Ip Man LegacyStar Trek Discovery TV series etc). When one day Kate met with a mysterious man named called Tom (Henry Golding - A Simple Favor etc), she felt attracted despite not knowing anything about him.

Jumanji: The Next Level - Still as Fun-Filled and Enjoyable Sequel and Mostly Entertaining Movie

After playing in theaters for few days, I finally got the chance to see this movie with my wife last night. This was due to the fact I was a bit particular and insistent in watching this kind of movie in the theater with Dolby Atmos system, which made it quite challenging to match the timing with our own schedule. Anyway I'll just go straight to the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Set some time after Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the four friends Spencer (Alex Wolff), Martha (Morgan Turner), Bethany (Madison Iseman) and Fridge (Ser'Darius Blain) planned to get together during the holiday. Meanwhile Spencer had his grandfather Eddie (Danny DeVito - Dumbo live version etc) staying in his house.

Guilt By Design - A Movie with Smart Idea and Twists that could Still Surprise Audience

When I saw in the social media of one of the cinemas in Indonesia, I noticed there was this movie released only in several studios in Jakarta. I was intrigued by the premise and besides it has been a while since I saw a good quality Chinese movie in theater. So when we got the chance to see it on Saturday, my wife and I bought the ticket for the 12.45 PM show in between her events schedule. OK now we'll start with the movie.

Brief Story Line

(TV SERIES) The InBetween Season 1 - A Short Lived Police Procedural Series with Supernatural Elements that Sadly did not Have Time to Live Up to Its Potential

I watched glimpses of this series when it was aired in one of the cable TV and thought it was kind of interesting. But I only got the chance to watch the complete first season recently. Too bad though that I found out later the series has been cancelled. Nevertheless, I still want to write something about it. So let us get on with it now.

Since my wife and I are fans of adventure comedy movies and after seeing the trailer few times, we thought the movie looked interesting so we did not hesitate to buy the tickets during the advance sale event last week. Midway - A World War II Movie with Some Great Visual Effects and Focusing (a Bit too Much?) on Historical Accuracy

Doctor Sleep - A Different Style Adaptation of Stephen King's Novel & Sequel to 1980's The Shining

This was a movie which I had no idea whatsoever about the premise but to my surprise it had an advance ticket sale event since last week. After I read a bit detail, I found out that it was a sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed horror movie from 1980 titled The Shining which was adapted from Stephen King's novel. My wife who could not accompany me as she was having another holiday trip, bought the ticket for last night's show. So how was the movie? Let us get into it below.

At another city far away from Dan's place, a young girl named Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran) was starting to develop her own shining ability which was even greater than what Dan had.

(TV SERIES) Swamp Thing Season 1 - An Interesting & Dark but Unfortunately Short-lived Superhero Series with Some Strong Horror Feel

I have heard about the making of this series some time ago, but then I read news that it was cancelled only after premiering its 1st episode. Then I lose interest as I thought what's the point of watching only 1 episode. Turned out though that the rest of the episodes were still shown which made me intrigued and wanted to give it a try. Well anyway, I just completed the whole season few days ago and will share more below.

Countdown - A Horror Movie with Creative Idea and Fairly Good Execution

This was a movie that seemed interesting when my wife and I saw its trailer. We thought it has an intriguing idea and thus we decided to see it even if it was a supernatural horror movie. Terminator: Dark Fate - The Perfect Way to Bring Excitement to an Otherwise Tiring Franchise

I have been eyeing to see this movie for a while, especially since I saw the trailer few times earlier which made me feel excited. However, as it was released on a date where I could not drive to my favorite Dolby Atmos theater freely, I opted to see this on its 2nd day last night. We were able to catch the 5.50 PM show even though it was quite tight after office hour. Well enough of that and let's just get into the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Set in the current year, a new kind of Terminator called Rev-9 (Gabriel Luna - Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series etc) was sent from the future to terminate a seemingly normal young woman named Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes - Cumbia Ninja TV series etc). At the same time, a female enhanced human called Grace (Mackenzie Davis - Tully, Halt and Catch Fire TV series etc) was also sent from the future to protect Dani.

Things looked really bleak for Grace and Dani as Rev-9 was too sophisticated and had immense power, until they got the unexpected help from Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton - Dante's Peak, Beauty and the Beast TV series etc) and later on a "retired" T-800 model Terminator who now referred to himself as Carl (Arnold  Schwarzenegger - Commando, True Lies etc). They all reluctantly joined forces despite the animosity between Sarah and Carl to try and stop Rev-9 before it manage to kill Dani and change the future.

So what would happen to this group? Find them all in this truly amazing sci-fi action movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Wow! That was one awesome action movie. It has all the great elements from the first two Terminator movies which were perfectly combined with the fresh new people and an upgraded unkillable terminator from the future. What really made me love this movie was the amazing special effects which brought back so much memory of 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Back then I saw the movie with some friends and we were all so captivated by it and in awe of the scarily lifelike liquid based terminator which made Arnold's model obsolete at that time. And this one had similar kind of formula that I personally thought was a real success.

This movie had few of the craziest jaw dropping intense kind of actions I had ever seen. My wife and I were strapped to our seats during that real suspenseful almost nonstop chasing sequence in the early part. There were also few brief action sequence but it was truly satisfying for me as the climax was spectacular with some surprises along the way. It was one of the most memorable experience I had while watching a movie in a cinema, not only because of its awesomeness but also due to the nostalgic feeling I had.

For a movie which had a duration of 128 minutes, I did not feel it to be too long. There were some brief moments which felt like it was trying to bring the emotional feel, especially during the scenes where the main female leads were bonding, but I personally felt the bonding was more interesting when Carl was in the picture. To my surprise, he brought some brief humorous sense for us where we could chuckle a bit because of him. I also waited for the very long closing credits where it showed the many people involved in creating the wonderful special effects but it did not have any mid or post end credit scenes. Btw, this movie was categorized for 13+ in Indonesia which I think was OK, as long as they are comfortable with quite numerous foul language used.

Aside from the great special effects, I thought this movie was also entertaining because of the performances of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton who reprise their original roles and joined together after 28 years. Mackenzie Davis and Gabriel Luna were both perfect in portraying their roles and showing off their capability in action. Oh before I forgot, this movie did not consider Terminator 3-5 and considered itself as direct sequel of Judgment Day. Personally this made more sense to me although I could not say for other people. This type of treatment was similar to that 2018 Halloween which was a direct sequel to the 1978 movie and disregard all the films in between. This movie was directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool) with one of the producer James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar etc) himself who created the first Terminator films. So it should not come as a surprise that this movie had that strong original Terminator sense.

Overall this was a really fantastic action movie to my opinion as it had really great intense action sequence with epic climax scenes. It had some really wonderful special effects combined with cool Dolby Atmos sound effects plus a not too complex story to absorb, a bit of humor and brief emotional moment (which brought some tears to my wife) making this a truly entertaining movie for me and her. We were really satisfied after seeing this film and I personally would not mind watching it again just to experience all the actions. So if you are fans of Terminator series (especially the first and second movie), then this one would definitely satisfy you. Just do not overthink about the confusing timeline and ignore the other Terminator movies and you should be fine.

Happy watching!

Mike's movie moments rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Zombieland: Double Tap - Still a Fun Zombie Comedy Movie Though not as Spectacular as the Original

When this movie premiered on Wednesday, it did not play in my favorite Dolby Atmos theater after office hour, so my wife and I bought the tickets for the show at another cinema not far from our home. But as I was called up for an unexpected meeting at 7.30PM, and my wife was a bit hesitant to see this movie by herself, we decided to let go off the tickets and only got the chance to see this yesterday. OK, I'll just head on to the movie now.

(2019) The Addams Family - A Pretty Standard Remake of the Quite Famous 1990s Weird Family

I was kind of looking forward to see this movie as I saw the trailer and it looked fun. I was quite familiar with the family in this film and my wife was also quite a fan. Unfortunately though, when it premiered on Friday, it did not play in the theater near our home and the nearest one only played until 4PM. So we could only see this movie today at a cinema quite far. Anyway, let us get on with the movie now.

Hustlers - A Nice Enough Drama Movie Inspired by True Events

I saw the poster of this movie since few weeks back in Cinema 21 theaters and I noticed it had some well known names in it. But it did not make a list of my most anticipated movies. When it was released on Friday, then I read a little bit more and realized it had interesting premise and had been quite successful as well in the US. So I decided to see this movie yesterday together with my wife who had come back from her holiday trip the day before. OK, I will get straight to the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Destiny (Constance Wu - Crazy Rich Asians etc) was a new stripper working for a strip club and earning little money. One night she noticed an experienced stripper named Ramona Vega (Jennifer Lopez - Ice Age: Collision Course, Maid in Manhattan etc) who was able to dance her way to so much money in a night. Perempuan Tanah Jahanam - One Quite Intelligent Horror Movie with More Disturbing than Horrifying Scenes

It was quite a dilemma for me whether to see this movie or not. On the one hand it is an Indonesian horror movie which is not really my favorite genre, but on the other hand, it was directed by one of the most respected director Joko Anwar. In the end, I opted to give it a try but I could only see this last night, as on its premier date, all the studios near my home were almost fully booked. Well without further ado, I'll just get on with the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Maya (Tara Basro - Gundala, Killers etc) and her best friend Dini (Marissa Anita - Istirahatlah Kata Kata, Galih dan Ratna 2017 version, etc) were having financial difficulties and decided to see if there was possibility to acquire an old house thought to belong to Maya's parents. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil - Equally Stunning Visual Effects as the Original but Pale in Comparison in Terms of Story

This movie was something that I looked forward to see together with my wife, as it was a film set in the universe of the fairy tales which my wife adored a lot. It was also the sequel to the successful movie back in 2014. However, as she was having a holiday trip on her own and I could not accompany her due to my work schedule, I went to see this movie by myself when it premiered last night. Well how was the movie? Let's find out below.

Brief Story Line

The Informer - A Pretty Average Crime Thriller Drama Movie

This was a movie that I was intrigued after reading the brief synopsis available on the cinema website. But when it was released last Friday, there was only a few studios playing the movie. I guessed the cinema did not have confidence in showing it in a wide release. Anyway, I only got the chance to see this on Sunday at a studio which required a bit of effort to go to. As my wife was out of town for holiday, I went to see it by myself. So here's a bit more on the movie.

Brief Story Line

Pete Koslow (Joel Kinnaman - Hanna TV series, Suicide Squad etc) was an undercover informer working for the FBI with his handler Agent Wilcox (Rosamund Pike - Die Another Day, Gone Girl etc) and her superior special agent Montgomery (Clive Owen - Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Closer etc). His latest assignment was to uncover the drug distribution by the Polish mob.

The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos - A Pretty Entertaining Action Movie with Classic Bad Guys vs Worse Guys Story

Yesterday my wife and I went to an event called Korea Indonesia Film Festival (KIFF) 2019 at CGV Grand Indonesia and we got two tickets courtesy of Virgin Radio. We were very fortunate to get the tickets since 1 of my wife's IG follower could not come to the event and she offered the tickets for us, knowing that we both love to see movies. Anyway, after some commercials, the movie finally started at around 7.15 PM, oddly without any introduction. OK we'll go ahead with the film now.

Brief Story Line

When a group of dangerous criminals managed to escape from prison, the chief of Special Crime Unit Oh Gu-Tak (Kim Sang-joong - My Husband's Woman, The Rebel TV series etc) was tasked to apprehend them. In order to do so, he created a team which consisted of the infamous ex-gangster boss Park Woong-cheol (Ma Dong-seok - The Gangster, the Cop and the DevilTrain to Busan etc), a young new prisoner Ko Yo-sung (Jang Ki-yong - Come and Hug Me, Kill It TV series etc) and last but not least, a female con artist Kwak No-soon (Kim Ah-joong - 200 Pounds of Beauty, Live Up to Your Name TV series etc).

Gemini Man - A Unique Premised Movie with Some Mind Blowing Actions & Huge Amount of CGI Effects

When I saw this movie's trailer in the past few weeks, I thought this looked like a great full action movie, plus the main lead was Will Smith who was quite amazing as action star. So by the time it was released yesterday, I immediately requested my wife to buy the tickets for the show at my favorite Dolby Atmos theater as I was certain it had such sound effects. Good thing it did play there and we could see the 7.05 PM show. Well was it any good? Let's get into detail now.

Brief Story Line

Henry Brogan (Will Smith - Aladdin live version, Focus etc) has decided to retire from his work as assassin for the government. During his retirement, Henry befriended with the manager of the boat rental named Danny (Mary Elizabeth Winstead - 10 Cloverfield Lane, Sky High etc). However, due to some reasons, Henry himself became the target of assassination by his former employer Clay Verris (Clive Owen - Anon, The International etc).

When this movie was scheduled to be released on last Friday, my wife and I already planned to see it after work. But alas, the movie was only playing in very few theaters and not even those that were located near our home. We finally did get to see it on Saturday night after we saw another film earlier, at a different location. So it took a bit of effort but we thought it would be worth it. Anyway, I should move on with the movie now.

City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes - A Highly Entertaining Movie for Fans of This Skillful but Pervert Detective

It was a bit of a challenge to see this movie as it did not play in that many theaters and only few cinema chains. But my wife and I were lucky it did play in a cinema which even though located not very close to our home but not that far either. It was in a mall that was only a year old and still have lot of vacant places, making it a convenient place to wait before the movie starts, if you are into that kind of spot. Anyway I'll just get into the film now.

(TV SERIES) Pennyworth Season 1 - An Interesting Series About the Younger Days of Bruce Wayne's Loyal Butler

These last few days, I have been watching this quite brand new series about the early days of one of the most famous characters in DC comics. As so happened, it caught my attention because I have heard about the plan to make this series but I did not realize it had been completed until last week. Plus with the hype of Joker movie, it feels just perfect watching this now. Anyway, I'll just go ahead with the story.

Brief Story Line

Set between 1950s and 1960s London, a young Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon - The Imitation Game etc) had just returned to his hometown after 10 years of service in the elite British Special Air Service (SAS) with his fellow army friends, the hot headed and always drunk Daveboy (Ryan Fletcher) and the calm Bazza (Hainsley Lloyd Bennett). They all worked at a night club as bouncers, but Alfred had always had high ambition and wanted to open his own security consultant. He also still lived with his parents, Mary (Dorothy Atkinson) and Arthur (Ian Puleston-Davies).

Joker - A Fantastically Done Joker's Origin Movie Capped by Stellar Performance from Joaquin Phoenix

It was a rare moment where a movie about a super villain from comic books got the headline for its rave reviews. Naturally I was intrigued to see the film and my wife and I went to see this last night during its first day of release in Indonesia. As I thought it was not a full action movie, I did not mind to see it in the theater near our home with standard sound system. Well how was the movie then? I'll get on with it below.

Brief Story Line

Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix - Gladiator, The Village etc) was a mentally disorder person who worked as a clown for hire. He had been taking medications for his sickness and was living with his mother Penny (Frances Conroy - American Horror Story, Six Feet Under TV series etc). Arthur had always wanted to become a successful comedian and he was also a big fan of a famous TV host Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro - The Intern, The Godfather Part II etc).

Pretty Boys - A Review by Yennymakanmulu

This was an Indonesian movie which I was actually pretty interested. But due to last minute thing, I decided not to see the film and so my wife went to see it by herself. It was playing in the theater near our home so it was very convenient for her to go in the afternoon and be home for dinner. Anyway, as she had written her usual lovely post on the movie, I will just provide some hints of it below:

[MOVIE] Pretty Boys – Kisah Anugerah dan Rahmat

Pertama gw tau film Pretty Boys itu waktu gw liat Vincent dan Desta lagi shooting iklan buat promo filmnya di epiwalk. This was the movie that I wanted to see as soon as I came back from my business trip last week, but I only got the chance to do it yesterday. It was still playing in many theaters and available in all cinema chains, so not too difficult to search for a studio. OK, I'll just head down to the movie now.

Midsommar - An Unusually Disturbing and Depressing Cult Horror Movie

After weeks of contemplating whether or not to see this movie, I finally decided (and got the chance) to see it during last weekend. This was due to the fact the movie was released while I was on holiday trip and I tried to play catch up with many more new released movies during the period. But as it garnered quite a lot of hype, I was still keen to find out about the movie. As my wife was not a fan of such film, I saw this one by myself. Anyway, let's get on with the movie.

Ad Astra - A Really Slow Paced Drama Sci-fi Movie with Brad Pitt's Awesome Performance and Stunning Visual Effects

This was one of the movie that I honestly did not have a clue what it was all about. I did not read anything about it and the trailer did not reveal too much information, but it did not seem to be having a lot of spectacular moments either (apart from one scene which intrigued me). Anyway as it was one of the new release movie this week, plus it had a major star in it, my wife and I decided to see it last night. Again due to the traffic restriction, we opted to see this at the cinema near our home, rather than at our favorite Dolby Atmos studio. So let us proceed with the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Set in the near future, when the space travel was already quite common and even trip to the moon was done commercially, an unidentified power surges happening throughout the earth and endangering the planet. Major Roy McBride (Brad Pitt - Mr & Mrs Smith, World War Z etc) a veteran and quite famous for being calm under dangerous situation was given special assignment which related to his father, the astronaut Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones - Jason Bourne, The Fugitive etc).

(TV SERIES) The Orville Season 1 - A Very Entertaining Sci Fi Series with Some Touches of Humor

While on my holiday trip last month and during the quite long flight, I was unable to find movies that I could watch (except for The Great Battle) as the rest of them I have seen already. So I decided to try watching TV series. Apparently there was option of several series and lucky for me, one of them was shown from first season. Since the premise was interesting, I gave this a try. Only four episodes were shown in the inflight entertainment, and I just completed the rest of them this week. Well we'll go ahead with the series.

Brief Story Line

Set in the 25th century, after having a bit of a slump in his career, Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane - Family Guy TV series, Ted etc) finally got his break when he was appointed as the captain of a mid-level exploratory space vessel named USS Orville. Rambo: Last Blood - A Good Enough (Hopefully) Finale of One of the Most Iconic 80s Heroes

When I heard they were going to make another Rambo movie, I was quite intrigued as I am a big fan of this character and all the movies in the franchise. When it premiered yesterday, I was having a bit of a challenge to see in my favorite theater with Dolby Atmos system due to the traffic condition. But as I did not have info on whether the movie had that specific sound effects, I opted to see it in the theater nearest to our home. My wife was supposed to accompany me, but she did not feel well at the last minute so I went to see it by myself. Anyway, let's go straight to the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Set many years after the event of the last movie, John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone - Creed 2Escape Plan: The Extractors etc) was leading a peaceful life in a ranch with an old woman named Maria (Adriana Barazza) and her teenage granddaughter Gabrielle (Yvette Monreal). Occasionally Rambo also become a volunteer when required.
