(SPECIAL SCREENING) A Dog's Journey - Another Miraculous Chapter in Bailey's Wonderful Life (Warning Possible Spoiler)

Once again my wife got the invitation to the screening of a drama movie which would premiere in Indonesian cinemas next week. The trailer had been shown to us many times before so we could guess what kind of movie it would be. Anyway, the film finally started after few minutes of introduction and vouchers giveaway. And how was the movie? Let's find out more below.

Brief Story Line

The story was told from the point of view of a dog who could reincarnate named Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad - Murder on the Orient Express, Jobs etc). He had been accompanying his master Ethan (Dennis Quaid - Frequency, The Rookie etc) from his childhood. Ethan and his wife Hannah (Marg Helgenberger - CSI TV series, Species etc) were taking care of their daughter in-law Gloria (Betty Gilpin - GLOW TV series etc) and her only baby girl Clarity June (CJ).

Due to some reasons, Gloria later on moved out and brought CJ away.  So when it was time for Bailey to pass, Ethan asked him to protect CJ in his next life. Meanwhile CJ had to go through her childhood years (played by Abby Ryder Fortson - Ant-man and its sequel) as well as her adult years (Kathryn Prescott - Finding Carter TV series etc) separated from her grandparents and under a lot of pressure from her mother. But she did have best friend from childhood named Trent (Henry Lau).

So what would happen to Bailey and could she fulfill Ethan's request to protect CJ? Find them all in this rather emotional drama movie.

End of Brief Story Line

When I saw the trailer to this movie earlier, my wife told me that it was the sequel to a wonderful movie she had seen before titled A Dog's Purpose. Since I never saw that one, I decided to watch it first before seeing this. And it turned out that I really adored that movie. It was so lovely, emotional and touching with many tearful moments. So I expected this movie to be similar to it.

During the movie though, my wife and I felt that there were few emotional moments, but to our surprise they did not feel so overwhelming like we experienced in the first movie. We concluded that it might be because we already knew about Bailey's "ability" to reincarnate and the sad feeling was not really felt like when we saw it first time, plus the trailer was a bit too long & detail that we were able to foresee the ending. However, there was still one or two moments that were touching and amazing, especially the ending part. It was a really heartwarming and a tearjerker moment at the same time.

As this was a sequel to that 2017 hit, I really thought that seeing that movie first before seeing this one would be crucial to provide the sense of understanding and attachment of how close Ethan and Bailey were. It was due to their relationship that we could appreciate their closeness and obviously the lovely understanding between this two. One thing that made this film (and its predecessor) loved by many audiences were definitely the voice of Bailey. If you had not known already, he was voiced by Josh Gad who also voiced that funny and kind snowman Olaf in Frozen.

Aside from the funny comments, remarks & expressions from Bailey, we also loved the various dog types of Bailey's new lives. They were played by cute dogs that were adorable and funny which would definitely brought joy to audience. The story itself was pretty standard with few light conflicts which were settled in a rather simple way. The cast here portrayed their characters pretty decent with one person probably stood out more to the female audience, i.e. Henry Lau in his Hollywood movie debut. Btw, there were quite nice photos during the closing credit but no mid or end credit scenes.

Overall this was a movie that would please dog lovers due to the amount of screen time they had, and a quite heartwarming drama. It was based on the novel of the same title written by W. Bruce Cameron. Definitely a nice drama that would make even the strongest heart melt. I knew that there were more than a few dry eyes in the cinema after the movie finished. So if you are fans of such movie, you should definitely give this a try. My advice though, be sure to look for the first movie and watch it before seeing this so you have a more complete experience.

Happy watching!
