Countdown - A Horror Movie with Creative Idea and Fairly Good Execution

This was a movie that seemed interesting when my wife and I saw its trailer. We thought it has an intriguing idea and thus we decided to see it even if it was a supernatural horror movie. So when it premiered last night we went ahead to a cinema not far from our home and caught the 7.05 PM show. Now I will go straight to the movie.

Brief Story Line

A young nurse named Quinn (Elizabeth Lail - You TV series etc) had downloaded an app which supposedly able to predict how much time a person had until her demise. She panicked upon learning that she had only 3 days left and found out other people really died just as the app predicted.

Things got complicated when Quinn's younger sister Jordan (Talitha Bateman - Annabelle: Creation etc) also downloaded the app. With the advice from Father John (P. J. Byrne - The Wolf of Wall Street etc), Quinn sought help from tech employee Derek (Tom Segura) where she met with Matt (Jordan Calloway - Black Lightning TV series etc) who had similar problem.

So what would happen to Quinn and the rest of them? Find them all in this pretty creative horror movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Now this movie was quite successful in creating the scary moments. The various jump scare scenes were very effective to my opinion. There were few times I got shocked with those scenes. Meanwhile my wife was able to predict better and close her eyes during those moments (or she could have done it because she closed her eyes most of the time. LOL).

The idea of this movie was really creative and what made my wife and I interested in seeing it was actually due to the fact it was quite an up to date situation. There was even an important message that we both felt was delivered very effectively to audience especially when installing seemingly interesting new but unknown app. The execution itself I thought was pretty well done proven by the fact that we and most of the audience who saw the movie last night were having muffled screams multiple times.

Now the ending or conclusion though was something that probably not satisfying for hard core horror seeker. It was a bit over simplified although the attention to detail should be admired. And due to this part, the ending was less scary than the build up which made this film had a less than satisfying finale. One thing that I noticed a bit lacking was the countdown moment was not done in real time like in the popular TV series 24 where they were set in real time up to the seconds. But then again, not all major movies did everything in real time anyway so it could be forgiven for not following this formula.

The actors and actresses in this film played their part adequately. A lot of names were put in the cast but the ones who left impression to me were those named in the Brief Story Line section. Oh there was one actor who also had an important supporting role i.e. Peter Facinelli (Supergirl TV series etc) as Dr. Sullivan. And the character Derek was also a scene stealer with his sarcasm and dry humor which brought some light to this film. There was also a mid end credit scene that should not be missed, but no post end credit scene. Btw, the sound effects in here was pretty awesome for a standard Dolby as it brought out the scary moments perfectly.

Overall I thought this one was a worthy horror movie to be seen in cinema. It had a bright and interesting creative idea with good enough execution. The horrifying part was quite consistently shown throughout the movie. Only the ending which was not as scary as the early and middle part, plus a rather over simplified conclusion but with an interesting twist and good attention to detail. Surprisingly my wife and I had better than expected experience seeing this one. So if you are looking for a creative enough horror movie then this certainly could be an option. However if you prefer a disturbing or truly intelligent horror film then this might not be satisfying. The choice is yours.
