(TV SERIES) DC Doom Patrol Season 1 - A DC Superhero Team Adventure that Might be a bit too Weird for My Taste

I have been meaning to watch this series ever since I saw them introduced in one of the episodes of Titans first season. But as I was catching up other older series I forgotten about it and only remembered 2 weeks ago. Ok we will get on with the series now.

Brief Story Line

Niles Caulder aka the Chief (Timothy Dalton - License to Kill, Hot Fuzz etc) was a scientist who have a habit of helping people with certain unique attribute/abilities. He lived in a big house called Doom Manor together with Jane (Diane Guerrero - Orange is the New Black TV series etc) the woman who had 64 personalities, Rita Farr (April Bowlby - Drop Dead Diva TV series etc) a former famous 50s movie star, Larry Trainor (Matt Bomer - White Collar TV series, The Nice Guys etc) who worked as US Air Force test pilot and was exposed to some energy out of space and Cliff Steele (Brendan Fraser - George of the Jungle, The Mummy trilogy etc) a former Nascar driver who had an accident and was saved by the Chief.

When one day Niles left the house, Jane and the rest of the gang went to town where they unintentionally wreak havoc with their peculiarities. As the group tried to escape and leave the manor, news of them had spread around and a long time nemesis of Niles named Eric Morden/Mr. Nobody (Alan Tudyk - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Trumbo etc) came and captured him. With the addition of the well known superhero Cyborg/Victor Jones (Joivan Wade - The First Purge etc), the group who would later assume the name Doom Patrol would do their best to rescue the Chief.

So what would happen to all of them? Find them all in this unusual and weird superhero team.

End of Brief Story Line

This was one series that I sometime felt a bit too weird for my taste. First of all the team consisted of a group of misfits who were not like the typical superheroes but more like accidents waiting to happen. I have no objection of watching them at all but on certain occasion it felt quite frustrating seeing them, not to mention only the characters Jane and Cyborg who had powers that would justify being a superhero. The rest of them despite having some kind of abilities (if you want to call it that), it was uncontrollable and made them more like liability than asset.

However, despite them not having significant powers that would wow us, they were really fun to watch because of their dry humor, wits and interaction. There were quite a lot of times when I would chuckle or at least smile due to their funny remarks (my personal favorite character was Cliff). And another character that was fun was the main villain Mr. Nobody especially as the narration was done by him (which was unique in itself). There was also some breaking of fourth wall by him that made the humor stood out.

For a series that has got 15 episodes in the first season, the story development to my opinion was a bit slow. Many episodes were more "character driven" as what Mr. Nobody said and focused a lot on each character's history and background with many flashback scenes to help us understand them. Episode 3 was one of my favorite as it showed what few of these people could do. Meanwhile episode 5 was very unique and another personal favorite as I thought it was intelligently done. While the rest was more background stories. Not until the 14th episode that finally we got to the interesting part, although the season finale was not as spectacular as I had hoped for.

After watching the whole season, I could understand why critics loved this. It was unlike standard superhero series with lots of superpower shown but instead focused a lot on character development and the cast were enjoyable to see too. However, as I was hoping for more actions especially having 15 episodes, the slow pace was a bit frustrating for me, not to mention the weirdness was too much to my liking. At certain times I felt bored which would explain the longer than usual time for me to complete 1 season (I think it took me 2 weeks to finish it). Overall though this was not a personal favorite of mine, but audience who wanted to enjoy different kind of superheroes from DC, with some smart jokes plus unusual characters would find this to be really entertaining. So whether you would enjoy it or not truly depends on your cup of tea. The choice is yours.
