Again this was one movie which I had been eyeing to see when it first premiered, but as I was away for holiday with my wife, we could only see this last night. For this I opted to see in the cinema with Dolby Atmos system as I want to feel the effects of the sound. Luckily it was playing at 6.25 PM which was just perfect after my office hour. OK I'll go ahead with the movie now.
Brief Story Line
Set 27 years after the events in the first movie IT, all the Losers club had already grown up and mostly moved out of Derry town, except for Mike (Isaiah Mustafa - Shadowhunters TV series etc). So when the missing children started again and likely the evil clown (Bill Skarsgård - Castle Rock TV series etc) resurfaced, Mike realized that It has not been killed. He started to call the rest of his friends starting with their leader Bill (James McAvoy - Glass, Atonement etc), the only female Beverly (Jessica Chastain - X-MEN: Dark Phoenix, The Help etc), the trashmouth Richie (Bill Hader - The Angry Birds Movie 2, Trainwreck etc), Ed (James Ransone - Sinister etc), Ben (Jay Ryan - Beauty & The Beast TV series etc) and Stanley (Andy Bean - Swamp Thing TV series etc).
Even though things became a bit awkward at first, but soon they became close again despite not seeing one another for many years. It was a good thing too as the imminent threat from It was truly great and they had to have each other's backs if they want to kill It once and for all.
So how would this story conclude? Find them all in this entertaining horror movie.
End of Brief Story Line
This movie had a duration of 169 minutes which was very long by any standard. But I personally did not feel it was excessively long since the way the story was told, it was kept interesting throughout the whole movie. Reason for this was due to the flashbacks provided where the original Losers club were still shown. We could still see the beloved kids from the first movie here with all their behaviors and the many fun moments we felt from their friendship. And the early part where one by one of the adult version of these kids were introduced were fun as well, as it made us kept wondering who they were.
One thing that I really had to applaud was the casting department. They managed to look for actors and actress to play the mostly perfect adult version of these kids. Somehow they resembled their kid version and at times my wife and I could really picture them as their real grown ups. And I thought that they did their job fantastically by portraying their characters which made them convincing not only due to their physical resemblance but also their personalities. If I have to single out, I thought that Bill Hader was truly one of the most similar, especially with the way he trash talked.
However, because the story focused quite a lot on the friendship of these Losers club and also their struggle as adults, I sometimes felt that the drama took a bit center stage. The main villain was shown a little bit lesser than I would have liked personally. This resulted to lesser feel of creepiness that I sensed during the first movie. Yes, there were still a number of scenes that could shocked or scared us, especially whenever It tried to take its victim plus the wonderful Dolby Atmos effects which were put to maximum use. But somehow the totally eerie and really scary feeling I had in the first movie was not that enhanced in here. Plus the climax which seemed a little bit simplified, though I understood it was quite loyal to the novel.
As a supernatural horror movie, this one was pretty entertaining. I loved the storytelling that was done by the director Andrés Muschietti just like he did in the first movie. It is certainly better if the same director do the directing as he would have the same vision and feel of how to maintain his idea. The sets of 1980s were also another factor that I loved in here, plus the music. And another thing that made this movie enjoyable was the fantastic make up effects and the amazing special effects. Oh btw, there was a surprise cameo in here which you should be able to recognize if you had seen the person somewhere. And there was no mid or post end credit scene in this movie.
Overall I had a great time seeing this movie with all the wonderful things I said above. The duration might be a bit of a hurdle for some people to enjoy, but if you liked the first movie, you should definitely see this one to find out the conclusion & likely you would be entertained as well. The only part that I personally would have liked more was the larger screen time for It which would have made the movie perfect for me. One reminder that this is a sequel, so it would be best if you had seen the first movie before seeing this one for better appreciation and greater attachment to the characters.
Happy watching!
