Hallow Road - A Smartly Done Pychological Thriller in Confined Space With Surprising Twist

During the last two weeks, my wife and I went on another vacation out of the country and therefore did not have the chance to see any new movies in the theater. Despite still have access to certain streaming services, I focused on continuing old series rather than watching new releases so I would not feel "obligated" to write my views about them. Anyway on my flight home using Garuda Indonesia, I watched this film that I never heard of but had interesting premise. All right then, here's more on the movie.

Brief Story Line

Awaken at 2 AM in the morning, Maddie (Rosamund Pike - The Wheel of Time TV series, The Informer etc) decided to clean her kitchen when she got a call from her teenaged daughter Alice (Megan McDonnell - The Rainmaker TV series etc). Maddie's husband Frank (Matthew Rhys - Perry Mason 2020 TV series, Seal Team etc) who also woke up was concerned on Alice whereabouts. It was later revealed that Alice had taken Frank's car and stormed out after they had a huge fight.

(TV SERIES) The Orville Season 1 - A Very Entertaining Sci Fi Series with Some Touches of Humor

While on my holiday trip last month and during the quite long flight, I was unable to find movies that I could watch (except for The Great Battle) as the rest of them I have seen already. So I decided to try watching TV series. Apparently there was option of several series and lucky for me, one of them was shown from first season. Since the premise was interesting, I gave this a try. Only four episodes were shown in the inflight entertainment, and I just completed the rest of them this week. Well we'll go ahead with the series.

Brief Story Line

Set in the 25th century, after having a bit of a slump in his career, Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane - Family Guy TV series, Ted etc) finally got his break when he was appointed as the captain of a mid-level exploratory space vessel named USS Orville. His senior crews included the pilot as well as his best friend Lieutenant Gordon Malloy (Scott Grimes - Robin Hood 2010 version, Party of Five TV series etc) and First Officer Commander Kelly Grayson (Adrianne Palicki - G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Friday Night Lights TV series etc) who was also Ed's ex-wife.

The Great Battle - An Amazing War Movie with Some Breathtaking Battle Scenes

During the flight home to Jakarta last week, I was browsing through the inflight entertainment of Garuda Indonesia which unfortunately had not been updated for more than 2 months and mostly the films (even TV series) have been watched by me. But then I noticed this movie which somehow eluded me few times earlier. I thought a war movie might be nice for a change and there was no other worthy option anyway, so I gave this a try. How was the movie? Let's get more into it now.

Brief Story Line

Set in the year 645AD during the Tang Dynasty in China, their emperor Taizong (Park Sung-woong - The Dude in Me, Monstrum etc) led an army of 500,000 men to invade Goguryeo (one of the ancient kingdoms of Korea). When they were almost reaching the capital, they encountered a rather small city of Ansi which Taizong thought would be easy picking.

The Adventurers - A Rather Light Hong Kong Heist Movie

This was the last movie that I saw during my flight back home last Saturday. Well actually not the real final movie as there was another one that I watched but unfortunately unable to complete due to insufficient time after seeing 3 movies earlier. Anyway, I chose this one since it seemed like an interesting heist movie and also starring 1 of my favorite actors, Andy Lau. So what was the movie about? Let us get on with it now.

Brief Story Line

Dan Cheung (Andy Lau - Shock WaveSaving Mr. Wu and so many more) was a thief who was just released from prison after 5 years sentence for stealing a valuable jewelry. A French police detective Pierre (Jean Reno -  Léon: The Professional, The Pink Panther etc) who was Cheung's "nemesis" did not believe that he was truly rehabilitated and was very confident he would be returning to his old ways of stealing.

All the Money in the World - The Story Behind Kidnapping of J. Paul Getty's Grandson

While I was on the flight home using Garuda last Saturday, I had the chance to watch few movies as the duration of the flight was a little over 7 hours. I was a bit undecided to see which movie first and after few minutes of scrolling back and forth, I finally chose this one as it had few nominations in Golden Globe and in Academy Awards. And I happen to know that the movie already played in Indonesian cinemas sometime ago where I did not get the chance to see it. So here goes my views of the film.

Brief Story Line

The movie was set in the year 1973 where John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer - Granite Flats TV series etc) was kidnapped in the streets of Rome. One of the kidnappers named Cinquanta (Romain Durais) later on called John's mother Gail (Michelle Williams - The Greatest Showman, Manchester by the Sea etc) and asked for a huge ransom which Gail immediately told them not possible as she had no money. But the kidnapper insist that she should get it from John's grandfather, the richest man in the world: J. Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer - The Sound of Music, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo etc).

Midnight Runners - A Very Funny Entertaining Story of 2 Police Students Trying to Solve A Kidnap Case

This was one of the movies that I watched during my 7 hours flight home from holiday. It was available through the Garuda inflight entertainment (which had sooo many options by the way) and classified under New Release & Comedy. Something that I was looking for after watching a very heavy drama earlier (I would post my views on that movie later). So let us get on with it.

Brief Story Line

Park Ki-joon (Park Seo-joon - Chronicles of Evil, Fight For My Way TV series etc) was the son of a single mother who wanted to apply to the Korean Police University in order to be getting free education. Ki-joon was an easy going, kind-hearted and passionate person who was always act first and think later. During the first few weeks of orientation before proceeding to the education, Ki-joon met and became best friends with Kang Hee-yeol (Kang Ha-neul - Twenty, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo etc) who was the total opposite of Ki-joon. He was a thinker and overly concerned of hygiene.

Confidential Assignment - A Good Old Fashioned Buddy Cop Action Movie

During the last trip to my mother's hometown last week, the four of us including my mom, wife and cousin went by Garuda airlines. As usual it was having an inflight entertainment and once I was on my seat, immediately I started to browse the movies that I could watch. One movie caught my attention which was this Korean film that seemed interesting. However, the duration of the movie was around 2 hours while my flight was less than that. But I thought I could see it during my flight home anyway. So I continued watching this one while my wife saw a different movie. Well let us continue with the story.

Brief Story Line

A North Korean investigator named Im Cheol-Ryung (Hyun Bin - My Name is Kim Sam-soon, Secret Garden TV series etc) was given a special assignment by his superior, to capture a rogue officer and former military named Cha Ki-seong (Kim Joo-hyuk - My Wife Got Married, The Servant etc) who escaped to South Korea bringing money counterfeit plates referred as Supernotes. Cheol-Ryung also had other motives for capturing Ki-seong and he would stop at nothing to do so.

Bounty Hunters - A Korean-Chinese Comedy Action Movie

When I got a sudden 1 day assignment to go to Singapore last Friday, I asked my wife whether she wanted to join me and we could go for a weekend getaway trip there. My wife was a big fan of Singapore and after thinking for a while, she finally decided to go, even though the departing time was at 6 AM which meant that we have to get up like 3AM in the morning to reach airport. This was due to the fact that I had to have a meeting at 10AM and the earliest plane would be Garuda which flew at that hour. As usual, I would definitely enjoy the inflight entertainment from them. There were so many options that I could chose from, but mostly when I can choose, I would pick Asian movies rather than Hollywood produced, since Asian movies were more difficult to see in Indonesia compared to the Western movies. Anyway, there were more than 1 that I can see, but I chose this as it was not too long and the lead roles were played by famous actors & actress. So what's the movie all about? Let's continue, shall we.

Time Renegades - also known as Siganitalja

As I was engaged to go to KL for a meeting, I took the Garuda flight in the morning and was very lucky to find tons of inflight entertainment available to choose. I was a little bit confused on which movie to watch during my 2 hours 5 minutes flight, so I decided to watch a movie that was shorter than that the flight schedule and still interesting. Hence this movie was chosen as it fit into the 2 criteria above as the movie was happening in 2 different timelines but somehow connected. I also chose this as I remembered wanting to watch the movie when it played in Indonesian theater few months ago, but was not able to see it due to some reasons. Anyway, let's get on with the movie.

Brief Story Line

While trying to capture a criminal on new year's eve of 2014, Gun-woo (Lee Jin-wook - Glass Castle & Nine: Nine Time Travels TV series) got shot and had to be hospitalized for some time. After this incident, he started to have a dream and can see through another person's eyes in 1983. He was able to see through Ji-hwan (Jo Jung-Suk - The Face Reader, My Love, My Bride etc) a music teacher working in a high school.

Saving Mr. Wu - Kidnapping of a Hong Kong Movie Star

I watched this movie while I was in the flight from Jakarta to Bali and return during my vacation trip with my wife @yennymakanmulu (as mentioned in my earlier post of Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice). This movie was inspired by actual events of a kidnapping of a major Hong Kong movie star in Beijing, China.

The story started with few people under the lead of Zhang Hua (played by Wang Qian Yuan) who were driving around in a car trying to kidnap wealthy people by impersonating as police officers. While looking for their next victim, they stopped by a karaoke place where they targeted to kidnap the person who drove the car that was parked outside (I think it's because it's luxury car). When the person came out of the karaoke place, apparently it was a famous Hong Kong movie star, called simply as Mr. Wu (played by the famous Andy Lau). While Mr. Wu was being asked to be photographed by fans and encouraged by the movie producer he had meeting with, Zhang Hua's gang insisted that the car Mr. Wu drove has been involved in a hit and run, so he had to be brought in for questioning. After some heated objection from Mr. Wu himself and his friend, the gang took out guns to threaten and ultimately Mr. Wu was driven in their car.

The scene later moved 18 hours after the kidnapping, where Zhang Hua appeared to have some bruises on his face and was being questioned in a police station by 1 of the detective, Xing Feng (played by Liu Ye). We would find out later that the deadline for paying the ransom would be less than 1 hour since that scene, afterwards, Mr. Wu would be executed.

Scene would move back to the time when Mr. Wu was brought to a house in a rather remote area where apparently there was another kidnap victim, Xiao Dou. To ensure Mr. Wu cooperated, Zhang Hua threatened to kill Xiao Dou for not paying his ransom. Mr. Wu could not watch the intended execution so he offered to pay the ransom for both of them which Zhang Hua and the other kidnapping members who consisted of a fan of Mr. Wu and 1 or 2 trigger happy thugs reluctantly accepted.

Since the bank where Mr. Wu kept his money only opened on the following day and to avoid Mr. Wu rescued by the police, Zhang Hua asked Mr. Wu to request 1 of his most trusted friend to collect the money. Hence Mr. Wu called Mr. Su (played by Lam Suet) who was his friend from the army days and requested him to withdraw the money from bank without telling the police.

Meanwhile the policemen tried their best to search for the gang's location since Zhang Hua did not want to inform the police. He felt there would be no point as he would be sentenced to death anyway due to heavy law violations including the purchase of firearms, kidnapping and murder. The police would later use various means such as interrogations of possible suspects, acquaintance, girlfriend, circling possible kidnap areas to acquire the information.

So can the police make it in time to rescue Mr. Wu? How was Zhang Hua captured? What will happen to him and the rest of his gang? Well, as usual, you would have to watch it till finished.

I had a good moment watching this movie, even if I had to wait for 3 days to watch the remaining 20 minutes of the movie (the flight was too short to watch full movie till finished). I believe Andy Lau has matured in the recent years by taking lesser action films and more dramatic films. He has also matured literally as indicated by my wife (her exact words were: "Andy Lau so old? I am shocked"....).
Anyway, if you are into a quite serious chinese movie with tension and dramatic scenes, you are welcome to watch this movie. There was also a song which was sung by Andy Lau as bonus. Or, if you happen to be going in a flight by Garuda, you can choose to watch this as it is one of the in-flight entertainment for the month of March 2016.
