Samaritan - An Entertaining Enough Dark Superhero Drama Movie

I noticed about this movie some time ago and I thought it looked kind of interesting, especially having the superhero genre. It was released on Prime Video two days ago but I only got the chance to watch it last night. Anyway, here's my thoughts on the movie.

Brief Story Line

Years ago in Granite city, a person with superhuman strength nicknamed Samaritan was presumed dead after a fierce battle with the villain Nemesis. In the present day, a young boy named Sam Cleary (Javon Walton - The Addams Family 2, Utopia TV series etc) who lived with his mother Tiffany (Dascha Polanco - Orange is the New Black TV series etc) and was a big fan of Samaritan, suspected that his neighbor Joe (Sylvester Stallone - Rambo: Last Blood, Escape Plan 2: Hades etc) was actually the beloved superhero.

Me Time - A Supposedly Raunchy Comedy Movie that Tried too Hard to Make it a Meaningful Drama

Feeling tired after a week's day hard work, I was in the mood for something fun to brighten up my day. And this new movie released on Netflix yesterday felt just like the perfect choice being a raunchy comedy and all. So how was the movie then? Let's find out more, shall we?

Brief Story Line

Sonny Fisher (Kevin Hart - The Man from Toronto, Central Intelligence etc) was a stay at home father with 2 small children, while his wife Maya (Regina Hall - Scary Movie films, Black Monday TV series etc) was a successful architect. After years of taking care of his family, Sonny was encouraged by Maya to take some alone time during her weekend holiday with the children.

With the hype surrounding this latest Indonesian movie to hit the theater, my wife and I were pretty enthusiastic and wanted to see it during the weekend. But as luck would have it, one of her friends could not make it to the cinema on its release date yesterday, and she passed the tickets to her. So both of us were fortunate enough to see it last night. Now my wife has written another wonderful post about the movie in Indonesian, and as usual, I will share it in here.

Udah lama film Mencuri Raden Saleh dipromosikan di mana2. Tapi gw gak gitu paham cerita apaan. Emang kan kebiasaan gw itu kalo ada film kaga mo tau ttg apa. Gk mo liat sinopsis kalo bisa hehehe. Dan spt biasa gw selalu nonton itu weekend, krn emang lebih suka aja. So, begitu advanced ticket dijual, ya gw kaga ikutan war lah. Tau2 rejeki banget kemaren persis, tgl 24 Agustus 2022, ada yg nawarin tiket nonton gratis di CGV fX Sudirman utk tgl 25 Agustus 2022, di jam 18:10. Wah, rejeki cicik soleha. Oiya akhirnya gw tau juga ini film ttg apa, karena udah baca di twitter. Jadi film yg disutradarai oleh Angga Dwimas Sasongko ini bertema heist. Widih, ciamik nih kayanya.

(Mini Series) Echoes - A Mystery Drama Thriller with Few Surprising Twists

When this series was released on Netflix last Friday, I was quite intrigued by the synopsis. But I started to watch it only during the weekend and managed to finished it last night. All right, let's get to it then.

Brief Story Line

Gina McCleary (Michelle Monaghan - Sleepless, Source Code etc) who was married to psychiatrist Charlie Davenport (Daniel Sunjata - Rescue Me TV series etc) was getting worried when she could not get hold of her identical twin Leni (also played by Monaghan). So when she heard from Leni's husband Jack (Matt Bomer - Doom Patrol TV series, Magic Mike etc) that she has been missing under suspicious circumstances, Gina immediately went to their hometown to find out what actually happened.

Nope - A Disappointing and Completely Different from Expectation Movie about Alien

When I saw the trailer to this movie few times earlier, I was intrigued and pretty excited with it. That's why I decided to give the movie a try with my wife, especially after finding out it has Dolby Atmos sound effect, which usually translate to something cool with lots of scenes that required such system. Anyway we saw this movie yesterday at the theater near our home which sadly did not have the sound system as most of them were already replaced with different films. OK let's get down to it now.

Brief Story Line

Otis Junior/OJ (Daniel Kaluuya - Get Out, Judas and the Black Messiah etc) and his younger sister Emerald (Keke Palmer - Lightyear, Scream Queens TV series etc) inherited a big ranch owned by their father Otis Senior (Keith David - Pitch Black, The Thing etc). However, it required a lot of money to manage the ranch. Hence OJ started to sell the horses to owner of a theme park and former child actor Ricky "Jupe" Park (Steven Yeun - The Walking Dead TV series, Minari etc).

(2022) Look Both Ways - An Unconventional and Anti Mainstream Romantic Comedy Movie

I have seen this movie's brief synopsis which looked mildly interesting when it was released on Netflix few days ago, but I was a bit doubtful to give it a try. Until my wife watched it first and told me it was very unique and there's a chance I would like it. So I decided to watch it 2 nights ago. And here's my views of the movie.

Brief Story Line

Natalie Bennet (Lili Reinhart - Hustlers, Chemical Hearts etc) was a college student who had a 5 year plan that she wanted to follow after graduation. However, after having sex with her close friend Gabe (Danny Ramirez - Top Gun: Maverick, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier TV series etc), she started worrying if she might be pregnant. With the suggestion from her best friend Cara (Aisha Dee - The Bold Type TV series etc), Natalie decided to take pregnancy test. 

Emergency Declaration - A Terrifying and Dramatic "Disaster in the Sky" Movie

My wife got an invitation to the special screening of this movie in a CGV cinema where we have confirmed to attend. Unfortunately though, due to some reasons we were unable to go and had to cancel it in the last minute. But since we were intrigued by the movie's premise, we went ahead for its sneak preview yesterday evening. OK, let's get to the movie now.

Brief Story Line

On what seemed to be a normal day at the Incheon airport in South Korea, a young man was considering to buy ticket with most people on board. The man later on revealed to be Ryu Jin-seok (Yim Si-wan - Misaeng: Incomplete Life TV series etc) finally decided to buy the ticket for flight KI501 to Hawaii. Meanwhile a single father named Jae-hyuk (Lee Byung-hun - The Magnificent Seven 2016 version, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra etc) was bringing his young daughter Su-min (Kim Bo-min) on the same flight where he seemed to personally know the co-pilot Hyun-soo (Kim Nam-gil - Memoir of a Murderer, Bad Guy TV series etc).

Bullet Train - An Entertaining Colorful Action Movie with Some Interesting Characters and Strong Dark Comedy

When this movie was released few days ago, I checked and found out that it was having Dolby Atmos sound effect. Hence I decided to see it in the weekend at a studio with such sound system. But our favorite cinema only had shows starting from 6 PM which we thought was too late for our taste. So we went and see it in a place little bit further but having 1 PM show. Anyway I'll just get right to it now.

Brief Story Line

In a Japanese bullet train aka Shinkansen, an assassin who just returned from hiatus with code name Ladybug (Brad Pitt - Ad Astra, Allied etc) was given a simple task of smash and grab. Unbeknownst to him though the thing he was supposed to get was from 2 deadly assassins called Lemon (Brian Tyree Henry - Eternals, Godzilla vs. Kong etc) and Tangerine (Aaron Taylor-Johnson - The Wall, Anna Karenina etc). They were doing an assignment for the infamous Russian gangster leader White Death (Michael Shannon - 12 Strong, Knives Out etc).

(2022) Prey - The Prequel to Predator Movies with a Simpler Story but Enough Excitement

I was aware of this movie when I saw it in the Coming Soon section of Disney+ and found out later that it was a prequel to Predator franchise. Since I like this sort of movies, I was definitely interested and gave it a try on Monday (not sure though when it was actually released on Disney+). Anyway, we'll get right to the movie then.

Brief Story Line

Set in the year 1719, a young Comanche woman named Naru (Amber Midthunder - The Ice Road, Roswell, New Mexico TV series etc) wanted to become a warrior even though she was actually trained to be a healer by her mother Aruka (Michelle Thrush - Blackstone TV series etc). When a lion attacked her village, Naru joined her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers) and other hunters to hunt despite their objection.

(TV SERIES) The Sandman Season 1 - A Visually Stunning Series Based on Best Selling Comics

After months of seeing this title in the Coming Soon section of Netflix, finally the series was released last week. Despite not knowing anything about it, just the fact that there were plenty of articles talking about the series made me feel intrigued. So I started watching this one during the weekend and completed it last night. OK, I'll dive into it now.

Brief Story Line

Story focused on the character Lord Morpheus/Dream of Endless aka the Sandman (Tom Sturridge - Mary Shelley, Sweet Bitter TV series etc) who was ruler of the kingdom in the dream world known as Dreaming. After being captured for very long time by humans, Morpheus managed to escape and return to Dreaming where his librarian Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong) took care of business while he was away. During his captivity, one of Morpheus' creation, a Nightmare called The Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook - We Can be Heroes, Beckett etc) broke away from Dreaming and wreaking havoc in the waking world. 

DC League of Super-Pets - Fun and Entertaining Adventure Movie of DC Comics Super Pets

This movie was released in the Indonesian cinemas more than a week ago but many of them have reduced the show time. For some reasons though, last weekend there were more studios showing the movie again, which I thought was a smart move as it served as counter programming against the only major release mid week, an Indonesian horror film. Anyway, I finally got the chance to see it yesterday with my wife in one of the theater a bit far from our home. Now why don't I get right to it.

Brief Story Line

Krypto (voiced by Dwayne Johnson - Rampage, Fast and Furious: Hobbs & Shaw etc) was a super dog who became superheroes with his master Superman (John Krasinsky - A Quiet Place Part II, The Office TV series etc). As he got close with his girlfriend Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde - Richard Jewell, Cowboys & Aliens etc), Superman realized that Krypto needed some new friends. So he tried to adopt new pets from an animal shelter where there were a dog named Ace (Kevin Hart - The Man from Toronto, Fatherhood etc), a pig called PB (Vanessa Bayer - Ibiza etc), Chip the red squirrel (Diego Luna - Blood Father, If Beale Street Could Talk etc), Merton the turtle (Natasha Lyonne - Russian Doll TV series etc) and a guinea pig named Lulu (Kate McKinnon - Yesterday, The Bubble etc).

Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion - The Sequel to One of the Scariest Horror Movie I had Seen

With all the hype going around this movie, I knew it was going to be filled with people who wanted to see it on the day of its release. Especially since the major cinema chains were having advance ticket sales. My wife who is not a fan of horror movie and did not even see the original was kind enough to offer to accompany me. But as I do not want to put her in the misery, I decided to see this yesterday by myself in a studio very near our house. OK, let's get right to it.

Brief Story Line

Three years after the events of Pengabdi Setan, Rini (Tara Basro - Perempuan Tanah Jahanam, Ini Kisah Tiga Dara etc) with her younger brothers Toni (Endy Arfian - Ghost Writer, Malik & Elsa etc) & Bondi (Nasar Anuz - Cinta Anak Sholeh TV series etc) and their father Bahri (Bront Palarae - Gundala, Zombitopia etc) were now living in a flats. The idea was to have safety in numbers should there be any danger as more people were living in the same flats.

Carter - A Very Explosive & Brutal Action Thriller Movie from First Person View

After seeing its trailer in Netflix for a while, I was excited to watch this movie once it was released yesterday. I also recommended this one to my wife who watched it a bit earlier than I did and finished it at roughly the same time with me. So let's get into the movie now.

Brief Story Line

During the pandemic that hit the world and seemed to originate from North Korea, a man (Joo Won - My Sassy Girl TV series, Alice TV series etc) woke up in a hotel without his memory. While still trying to figure out everything, he heard a woman's voice giving instructions on a device in his ear and told his name was Carter. The woman who later revealed to be Han Jong-hee (Jeong So-ri - The Spy Gone North etc) informed Carter that he must complete a mission that was related to the pandemic cure, otherwise a bomb in his mouth would be detonated.

Lightyear - An Entertaining Space Adventure Movie with Amazing Animations Sadly Hindered by Controversy

As a fan of Pixar Animation Studios animated movies, I was actually looking forward to see this one in the theater. But unfortunately due to some reasons, it was never shown in Indonesian cinemas. Luckily though, we are able to see it now that it was already released on Disney+. My wife and I immediately watched this yesterday once it was available. OK, let's get right to it then.

Brief Story Line

The movie focused on the character Captain Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans - The Gray Man, Avengers: End Game etc) who was a space ranger that was stranded in a faraway planet together with Commander Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba - Mrs. America mini series etc) and other crews of the space ship. 

(TV Series) Paper Girls Season 1 - Adaptation of Popular Comic Books Focusing More on the Coming of Age & Life Struggle than the Sci-Fi Element

I became aware of this series few days ago as I was looking for something new on Prime Video and also read about it somewhere. It certainly looked interesting so I gave it a try in the weekend and just finished it last night. Now I will go straight to it then.

Few hours after Halloween of 1988, four girls that consisted of the intelligent Tiff (Camryn Jones - Perpetual Grace, LTD TV series etc), the tomboy Mac (Sofia Rosinsky - The Other Side of the Door, Fast Layne TV series etc), the wealthy KJ Brandman (Fina Strazza - Above the Shadows etc) and the new girl Erin (Riley Lai Nelet - Altered Carbon TV series etc) were doing their runs of delivering newspapers to the neighborhood.
