Brief Story Line
Krypto (voiced by Dwayne Johnson - Rampage, Fast and Furious: Hobbs & Shaw etc) was a super dog who became superheroes with his master Superman (John Krasinsky - A Quiet Place Part II, The Office TV series etc). As he got close with his girlfriend Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde - Richard Jewell, Cowboys & Aliens etc), Superman realized that Krypto needed some new friends. So he tried to adopt new pets from an animal shelter where there were a dog named Ace (Kevin Hart - The Man from Toronto, Fatherhood etc), a pig called PB (Vanessa Bayer - Ibiza etc), Chip the red squirrel (Diego Luna - Blood Father, If Beale Street Could Talk etc), Merton the turtle (Natasha Lyonne - Russian Doll TV series etc) and a guinea pig named Lulu (Kate McKinnon - Yesterday, The Bubble etc).
However, things did not go as planned. When Superman was somehow got kidnapped, Krypto had no choice but to join with unlikely new friends to save his master and the world.
So how would the story conclude? You can find them all in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Well that was fun. I already knew that the movie would be comedic in nature but I did not realize it would make a lot of fun on the established superhero from DC comics. This reminded me a bit on the animated series Teen Titan. It was also nice looking at the pets taking the spot light here and made the headline instead of the Justice League heroes, especially when the villains were pets as well.
What made this movie enjoyable was the humor, the action and definitely the voice actors and actresses who performed their roles very well. Obviously the story would not have been interesting if not for the great work of the writers John Whittington and Jared Stern (who also directed this movie). Both of them have been known as writers for movies such as The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie. So they certainly got experience in writing animated comedy films.
Aside from the people I mentioned above, there were some well known names who provided support voice roles such as Keanu Reeves (John Wick movies etc), Alfred Molina (Spider-man: No Way Home etc), Daveed Diggs (Snowpiercer TV series etc) and few others. There were plenty of characters that those of us who have seen enough DC comics movie/series adaptation were already familiar with. However, the stars of the movie would still be these pets. It was really fun looking at how they develop as the movie progressed. My wife and I would laugh out loud few times or at least grinned looking at their behaviour.
This film though was not entirely just for laughs, as there were few touching moments too which did affect my wife and it has few nice background songs in certain scenes. Btw, the audience who saw this movie yesterday with us were mostly young children accompanied by one or two parents, with few bigger children who were allowed to see by themselves. So it was kind of a funny experience for us seeing a movie in a theater filled with majority kids. Yes, the movie was indeed classified for all ages which I think is correct as it managed to keep the children interested till it finished, even though it has a bit long duration of 105 minutes. Oh, there was one amusing mid end credit scene and a very interesting post end credit scene.
Overall this was an entertaining and fun movie suitable for kids and the more adult audience if you are into the kind of story of friendship among pets and also between pets and their owners. The animation were great, the music was nice and it got some good humor as well (those superhero toys were just hilarious). And in case you are wondering, there were some DC comics which focused on the Super-pets although few were created just for this movie. So if you still have the chance to see this film together with your children or if you are like us who are children at heart, then you can certainly give it a try while it's still playing in limited theaters.
