Yesterday - A Decent Romantic Comedy & Lovely Tribute to the Beatles

This was the movie that my wife and I had been eyeing for quite some time, ever since we saw the trailer. It had a unique and really intriguing premise that made us excited. But alas when it premiered last Friday, it did not play in the cinema nearest our home. As we were tired after going for the gala premiere of upcoming Indonesian movie that finished at 12 AM on the night before, we did not want to go further than the walking distance from our apartment. Well anyway, since it was not playing in that many theaters, we finally got to see this last night at the studio not far from my office. So let us get on with the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Jack Malik (Himesh Patel - EastEnders TV series etc) was a struggling musician who seemed to have no luck with his musical career. He only had the support from his long time childhood friend Ellie Appleton (Lily Evans - Baby DriverMamma Mia! Here We Go Again etc) who also had a crush on him and served as his manager, plus their 2 other best friends. However, things completely changed for Jack when a strange thing happened that made the whole world did not know about the Beatles.

Jack soon realized that it was an opportunity for him to make a name for himself using his knowledge of the beautiful songs written by the Beatles. It became even greater for Jack when the famous Ed Sheeran (played by himself) start to notice him, as well as a major record producer Debra Hammer (Kate McKinnon - The Spy Who Dumped Me, Office Christmas Party etc).

So how would the story conclude for Jack? Find them all in this fun drama comedy movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Just as I expected, this movie was a lot of fun. It was another one of those movies that was really creative by combining the popularity of the legendary band the Beatles in an alternate timeline with a nice love story. It was something that made me in awe of how a simple enough idea could be turned into a wonderful movie. This movie's main attraction was definitely the songs from the Beatles that were loved by so many people (though I am not sure about the millenials). It was made even nicer by the convincing appearance from Himesh Patel when performing the songs. His singing was wonderful and my wife also said that he had a nice voice. We truly loved it when he sang the songs like Yesterday or The Long and Winding Road and many many more. I saw the closing credits and could not keep track of so many songs in this movie which were all from the Beatles, and made me realized that they were even greater than I originally thought.

Aside from those great songs, there was also the love story part, which funnily enough felt more like a background at first but then became clearer that the movie was actually a romantic comedy whereas the alternate timeline was the background. The film itself felt light and did not have an over complicated story. There was not much of heavy conflict at all, apart from the moral dilemma. There were quite a lot of fun moments and witty remarks from the cast, which I thought was probably the specialty of British rom-com. It should not come as a surprise since the writer of this movie was Richard Curtis who also wrote some memorable hits like Bridget Jones Diary, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually and few others. It was directed by Danny Boyle who had experience in directing movies like Slumdog Millionaire or Steve Jobs.

I loved the cast of this movie. Himesh Patel really suit his role and had a nice chemistry with Lily Evans. I also loved the supporting cast like the funny Rocky (played by Joel Fry) and especially Jack's father (Sanjeev Bhaskar). Although this time I thought Kate McKinnon did not have sufficient screen time to show off her usual wits. Ed Sheeran also gave decent performance, albeit playing as himself which might not be a proper challenge. Oh there was also a surprise performance from a senior actor whom my wife and I knew from his performance in the hit TV series Once Upon a Time.

I think fans of the Beatles would have loved this movie a lot. There were many hit songs played in here, and there was even a trip down memory lane to the famous city of Liverpool where the Beatles were formed. And since I am a major fan of its football club, the sight of the city made me personally really interested to go there. Btw, there was a smart reference to Liverpool FC by Jack Malik in here (if you are soccer fans you would definitely know it).

Overall this was a nice movie. I liked the simplicity and how they did not try too hard to make it over complicated. Obviously the singing and the fun were the highlight in the movie for us. If there is anything that I might have liked better would be a shorter duration (it had 118 minutes). So if you are fans of British rom-com and you are also fans of the Beatles, please go and see this movie as it would entertain you. Go have fun and listen to some of their biggest hits in history.

Happy watching!
