Brief Story Line
On what seemed to be a normal day at the Incheon airport in South Korea, a young man was considering to buy ticket with most people on board. The man later on revealed to be Ryu Jin-seok (Yim Si-wan - Misaeng: Incomplete Life TV series etc) finally decided to buy the ticket for flight KI501 to Hawaii. Meanwhile a single father named Jae-hyuk (Lee Byung-hun - The Magnificent Seven 2016 version, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra etc) was bringing his young daughter Su-min (Kim Bo-min) on the same flight where he seemed to personally know the co-pilot Hyun-soo (Kim Nam-gil - Memoir of a Murderer, Bad Guy TV series etc).
In the city, Detective In-ho (Song Kang-ho - Broker, The Host etc) & his partner were investigating a report of airplane terror threat by a mysterious person. When they found that the threat was real and the person was already on board KI501, In-ho became really worried as his wife was also on the same plane. The minister of Land & Transport Sook-hee (Jeon Do-yeon - Secret Sunshine, Lost TV series etc) was immediately brought up to speed and she tried her best to ensure the plane can return safely to South Korea
Very soon though, the terror attack started and everyone on the plane were put in constant danger. So what would happen to flight KI501? You can find them all in this amazing dramatic terror movie.
End of Brief Story Line
This movie started off with standard pace where we were introduced gradually with the main characters. In the beginning, there was no clear indication of the terror threat. Things started to get more exciting when the plan of terror was found out and the attack began as the movie became more suspenseful and audience were kept on their toes. However, the suspense was not because of continuous action scenes but more of the intense moments the characters were enduring during the whole movie.
The movie itself was very interesting because of the top performances by the main cast who have won various awards in the past. With such experience, it was no wonder they managed to convince us on their emotions. Song Kang-ho in particular was brilliant from beginning till the very end. Oh and this movie had a long duration of 2 hours 27 minutes which honestly felt like an emotional joyride with some truly emotional moments. Towards the climax, there was a really touching scene that not only managed to affect my wife but also myself.
The terror on the plane also felt very terrifying because it happened in such a small space where everything seemed to go wrong and even when there seemed to be a solution, it was not a viable one and all hopes were lost. Btw, my wife and I had a bit of a debate on our preferred ending of the film. I preferred a more dramatic approach since I felt it was a bit anticlimactic, while she thought it would be more memorable if it had a darker ending. But both of us were of the same conclusion that this was an amazing disaster drama movie and we wanted to clap our hands when the movie finished (though it might have been embarassing as the rest acted very cool). If we had attended the screening invitation like below, the audience might have been more appreciative.
I admired the work of the director Han Jae-rim (previous film included critically acclaimed Rules of Dating, The King and few others) as he managed to bring out the best from the cast and maintained the high emotions throughout the movie. The background music was very good too as it enhanced our emotions, while the sound effects were OK as well. Overall this movie was entertaining for me and my wife, even though we were very tired emotionally after the movie ended. So when this film is officially released on 16 August in Indonesian theaters, you can certainly give it a try. If you are like us who love this kind of movie, then likely you would enjoy it as much as we did.
