Lightyear - An Entertaining Space Adventure Movie with Amazing Animations Sadly Hindered by Controversy

As a fan of Pixar Animation Studios animated movies, I was actually looking forward to see this one in the theater. But unfortunately due to some reasons, it was never shown in Indonesian cinemas. Luckily though, we are able to see it now that it was already released on Disney+. My wife and I immediately watched this yesterday once it was available. OK, let's get right to it then.

Brief Story Line

The movie focused on the character Captain Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans - The Gray ManAvengers: End Game etc) who was a space ranger that was stranded in a faraway planet together with Commander Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba - Mrs. America mini series etc) and other crews of the space ship.

As Buzz tried to look for ways to leave the planet, he had no choice but to join hands with a group of people that consisted of the inexperienced Izzy (Keke Palmer - Hustlers, Berlin Station TV series etc), the careless Morrison (Taika Waititi - Thor: Love and ThunderThe Suicide Squad etc) and tough old lady Darby (Dale Soules - Orange is the New Black TV series etc). Accompanied by his cat robot companion named Sox (Peter Sohn - Luca, The Good Dinosaur etc), Buzz must do his best to save all the people, especially with an unknown danger lurking around.

So how would the story conclude? You can find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I mentioned above that this movie was not released in Indonesia theaters, and to be honest, it was pretty disappointing since after my wife and I watched it, we found the reason to be a bit unjustified. We could understand if the disputed scenes were very long and a bit confusing for the very young children in a more conservative countries like Indonesia. However it was so brief that I think it would not have such a significant impact to the young minds, especially when the rest of the film had scenes that were a lot more memorable. But that's just our opinion. And ridiculously, Disney+ chose to categorize this one for 21+ which we believed was a bit extreme.

Anyway, this movie like in other Pixar films had such wonderful animations that it was a pity we could not see it in the large screen of a cinema with amazing sound effects. It was exciting, intense and entertaining at the same time. And the background music was just awesome, lifting up our emotions at the perfect moment. No wonder as the musical score was by Michael Giacchino who had experience in doing scores for Up, The Batman, Coco, some MCU movies and many more, winning numerous awards along the way. It also had plenty of hilarious scenes as well, usually involving Sox and Buzz's comments.

Watching this movie felt like seeing those great space adventure films that have lots of suspenseful action. As a fan of such genre, obviously I had a lot of fun watching this and was a bit surprised that it only had 105 minutes duration (including the very long closing credits to honor the animators and visual effects team) since it did not feel that long for me. Btw, there was a really funny mid end credit scene that made my laughed hard and if you wait a bit longer, there was also a brief post end credit scene.

The movie was directed by Angus MacLane who previously co-directed Finding Dory and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins back in year 2000. From what I read, it was MacLane's idea to bring this movie into reality. Sadly though it was not a success commercially due to various reasons, although critics did love the movie. Some people were not really keen probably because it was not exactly a Toy Story movie and having different actor to voice the character. I myself did not have a problem with that, since it was already made clear in the beginning that this movie was what inspired the creation of the Buzz Lightyear toy.

People who are accustomed to Pixar's films that have lots of emotional moments might feel that this one did not have as many of those (except for one beautiful scene before the half hour mark). For those who are into space adventure movie with great animations, this would surely be a joy to see. My wife and I liked this movie a lot as we both find it entertaining with its humor and action. Although personally to me, the revelation of the villain was a bit far fetched and I would have liked it better if it was done differently. So if you like the movie filled qualities I mentioned above, then you would surely like this one. After all it is a movie from Pixar Studio that usually translated to wonderful and entertaining film.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
