(Mini Series) Echoes - A Mystery Drama Thriller with Few Surprising Twists

When this series was released on Netflix last Friday, I was quite intrigued by the synopsis. But I started to watch it only during the weekend and managed to finished it last night. All right, let's get to it then.

Brief Story Line

Gina McCleary (Michelle Monaghan - Sleepless, Source Code etc) who was married to psychiatrist Charlie Davenport (Daniel Sunjata - Rescue Me TV series etc) was getting worried when she could not get hold of her identical twin Leni (also played by Monaghan). So when she heard from Leni's husband Jack (Matt Bomer - Doom Patrol TV series, Magic Mike etc) that she has been missing under suspicious circumstances, Gina immediately went to their hometown to find out what actually happened.

The town's Sheriff Floss (Karen Robinson - Schitt's Creek TV series etc) and her deputy Paula (Rosanny Zayas - The L Word: Generation Q TV series etc) were trying their best to find Leni's whereabouts. Gina also met with her father Victor (Michael O'Neill - Council of Dads TV series etc) and her older sister Claudia (Ali Stroker) who seemed to resent her. While everyone was looking for Leni, Gina who knew more than she let on, decided to do the unexpected based on something she found.

So what actually happened to Leni? You can find them all in this series.

End of Brief Story Line

This sort of mystery thriller was always interesting for me as it usually made me think and also excited to see if I guessed correctly. The first episode though was the critical point. If it was too simple or did not have any twist at all, then most likely I would lose interest and watched it just for the sake of crossing it from my list. Now this series did have a nice twist in the first episode, and it made me curious to find out more.

From the second episode onwards, the story became more complex and might be confusing if not watched in concentration. As we were shown various flash backs from Gina and Leni's childhood and teenage years, we got to know more on their lives and something dark which happened in the past. However, the story did not seem to progress too much and not until the mid of the series that suddenly it sprang to life. Subsequent to that twist, everything became more intriguing which culminated to a quite fascinating final episode. Even though that final twist was easily guessed, but I personally was pretty entertained by the series.

During the opening and closing credits, I did not see any information about the series based on, which meant that it was due to the creativity of the creator and executive producer Vanessa Gazy (whose other work was a mystery series titled Eden). I found out after reading more on the internet that this mini series was an Australian production which was surprising as the cast were Americans (or Canadian) and the story was set in the US. Aside from the cast I mentioned above, there were also familiar faces for me like Jonathan Tucker (Charlie's Angels 2019 version etc) and Celia Weston (Observe and Report, The Secret: Dare to Dream etc).

For me this series was interesting enough as a mystery drama thriller. It was not bad but not of the highest quality either. Michelle Monaghan was OK but sometimes her portrayal of two different characters were not distinct enough (although it could be justified by the way they were written). The mystery was not that difficult to guess, however it managed to keep me intrigued till the end. Of the 7 episodes, my favorite one had to be the 5th episode as it was the moment where my view of the series improved. Oh btw, the series was classified for 18+ due to brief nudity and be warned that there was self harm as well.

So if you are interested in watching a drama mystery of identical twins with a bit of darkness and some twists, then you can give this a try. It might be confusing a bit, but if you concentrate enough, you should be able to understand it. And what I liked the most was the fact it was a mini series, which meant that there is no worry of it got cancelled and the story would have proper closure (Or is it?). Anyway if you prefer something a lot darker or brilliantly done, then this might not be up to that standard. The choice is yours.
