Brief Story Line
Sonny Fisher (Kevin Hart - The Man from Toronto, Central Intelligence etc) was a stay at home father with 2 small children, while his wife Maya (Regina Hall - Scary Movie films, Black Monday TV series etc) was a successful architect. After years of taking care of his family, Sonny was encouraged by Maya to take some alone time during her weekend holiday with the children.
As he unsuccessfully attempt to have a good time, Sonny decided to accompany his best friend Huck (Mark Wahlberg - Uncharted, Instant Family etc) in his birthday party. Unfortunately though, the party was not what he expected and it might end up ruin his life.
So what would happen to Sonny? You can find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Just like the tagline of the movie "This is not what he had in mind", I too found myself feeling disappointed after watching this film as it was not what I foresee. I expected to see a light, raunchy comedy that was just for fun and did not require thinking. However, the comedy was not a lot and there was too much seriousness put into the movie that made this did not give me the pleasure of laughing out loud.
Some of the humor were the slapstick type which should be fun for me, but sadly most of them have been shown in the trailer. So you can imagine for the whole movie that had a duration of 101 minutes (without mid or post end credit scenes), the only times I could laugh were during the scenes that I had seen earlier. And I thought by the time Sonny rekindled with his old friend Huck, it would be hilarious all the way. However, their chemistry did not seem convincing and seemed a bit too forced. Even the addition of other cast like Jimmy O. Yang (Love Hard, Crazy Rich Asians etc) did not help make it better. His character was not interesting and did not suit him at all.
Aside from those cast, there were also some more support characters like Maya's client Armando (Luis Gerardo Méndez - Club de Cuervos TV series etc), her parents Gil (John Amos - Coming 2 America etc) and Connie (Anna Maria Horsford - The Wayans Bros. TV series etc). Unfortunately they did not make the movie any more fun either. This film was written and directed by John Hamburg who had varying degree of success in movies like Along Came Polly, I Love You, Man, and Why Him? which to me was more entertaining than this. Oh before I forgot, there were brief nudity and plenty of harsh language which made it classified for adults.
Overall this was not an entertaining comedy movie as it tried too hard to make it a meaningful drama rather than fulfilling the potential of Kevin Hart joining Mark Wahlberg in a wild adventure. So if you are looking for the kind of raunchy hilarious crazy comedy that would make you laugh out loud all the time, then you would not be satisfied by this.
