(TV SERIES) The Falcon and the Winter Soldier - Entertaining Superhero Series with Spectacular Action Sequence but Having a bit too Heavy Social Political Message

For a series that has garnered a lot of publicity due to being part of the phase four Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), obviously I was not going to wait for too long to watch it. I started the first few episodes 3 days ago so I could watch the finale on the day it was released. OK, I'll just head straight to the series now.

Brief Story Line

Set few months after the events in Avengers: End Game, Sam Wilson aka Falcon (Anthony Mackie - Outside the Wire, The Hurt Locker etc) was still going for missions as part of the Avenger, where he was supported by US army, Lieutenant Torres (Danny Ramirez). When he was not out saving the world, he would return to his home town and stay with his sister Sarah (Adepero Oduye - Pariah etc) solving everyday problems like any other normal family would have. But his biggest challenge has been the burden he felt due to the Shield passed on by Captain America.

Meanwhile Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan - The Martian, I, Tonya etc) who has been given pardon was struggling with his dark past and trying to make amends. He started to coordinate hesitantly with Sam when a new danger threatened in the form of anarchist group called Flag Smashers led by Karli (Erin Kellyman). Things further got complicated when a decorated US army named John Walker (Wyatt Russel - Overlord, Ingrid Goes West etc) was given the biggest assignment of all which really bothered Bucky.

With the danger they had to face and their own personal struggles, what would happen to Sam and Bucky? Find them all in this quite fun, action-packed Marvel superhero series.

End of Brief Story Line

Well this series was completely different from the first original Marvel series streaming on Disney+, Wandavision. While that one was truly unique with the sitcom premise, this one was more straight forward and having a much simpler story, though it did have some serious characters development and more importantly for me personally, more action. Even from the start we already got some cool action stunts that we usually would only see in movies. But then the pace slowed down a bit and focused more on the characters and introducing us with some people related to the story.

One of the most shocking development was the end of first episode which was quite astonishing. However, as soon as I got to the second episode, I could already foresee what would happen onwards, which made the twist in subsequent episodes failed to surprise anymore. Although I still enjoyed the story development especially the chemistry between Sam and Bucky (I watched the short compilation of these two superheroes in Marvel Studios LEGENDS just to give me a reminder of how they were in previous movies). There was a scene which was quite funny in 3rd episode that was in reference to the one from Captain America: Civil War.

As in Wandavision, there were few characters from MCU who reappeared in this series. I believe most of you had known them as they were not really a secret. The only person whom I did not guess was the one appeared in 3rd episode. But one thing that I did not like was the story arc of one of the cast since it was really out of character. I know it was supposed to be a surprise but it was not a pleasant one.

The main attraction of this series for me was definitely the action. As I said above, even from the start there was a great action sequence and in every episode there would always be a cool fight scene. Except for 5th episode which likely was to set up for the major fight in the finale. And it was truly satisfying as it was awesome and quite spectacular, especially supported by the nice suit and good sound effects. It sounded fantastic even when I watched this on my tablet.

On a side note, I felt the series developer was trying to be very serious in sending their message, one that is quite up to date with the recent social political condition in the world (especially in the US). And I think lots of people might have liked them, but for me it felt like too heavy a message to be put in this sort of superhero series. Personally I wanted to see a light series with lots of action and interesting partnership between 2 superheroes, so heavy political message just felt too much. Other than that though, I was still quite entertained by the series.

Btw, it was unclear if there would be a second season. The only mid end credit scene available was in the season finale which might give a hint for what would happen in second season should they choose to do it. So if you are part of the global Marvel movies fans, this series definitely should not be missed. Ooh and do not miss the title shown in the closing credit of the 6th episode! It would give a clearer indication of how MCU phase 4 would be.
