Brief Story Line
Set few years after the events in Godzilla II: King of Monsters, the Apex Cybernetics head quarter was suddenly attacked by Godzilla, making everyone worried about the danger from Titans. The CEO of Apex, Walter Simmons (Demián Bichir - The Midnight Sky etc) was looking for ways to counter Titans' strength and recruited Dr. Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård - The Legend of Tarzan, Big Little Lies TV series etc) to search for power source in the Hollow Earth where Titans originated. To find the location, Lind suggested to use Kong to guide them. Despite her reluctance, Kong's expert Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall - The BFG, Christine etc) decided to accompany Lind in this trip together with her adopted daughter Jia (Kaylee Hottle), and Apex executive Maia Simmons (Eiza González - I Care a Lot, From Dusk till Dawn the Series etc).
Meanwhile a conspiracy theorist named Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry - Super Intelligence, Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse etc) was suspicious of Apex. Together with Madison Russell (Millie Bobby Brown - Enola Holmes etc) and her friend Josh (Julian Dennison - The Christmas Chronicles 2 etc), they tried to investigate Apex intention.
So how would the story conclude? Why would Godzilla be fighting with Kong and what was Apex real intention? Find them all in this amazing monster versus monster movie.
End of Brief Story Line
I watched this movie together with my wife who was also very excited with the prospect of seeing Godzilla fight against Kong. And I got to say, both of us were very satisfied with the action sequence and obviously when they were both fighting. It was truly epic and spectacular! And most of it all, it was amazing seeing these two monsters who we have known for a while fight more than once. That final fight was really fantastic and breath taking, making me and my wife felt exhilarated by it. It was so great that even watching it on our TV was still very enjoyable.
For a movie that have been set up for years now, ever since the appearance of Kong in Kong: Skull Island, this felt like the proper ultimate finale. The future of monsterverse is not clear by the time I wrote this, since it seemed like it already finished its goal of pitting these two monsters. And the non existence of any mid or post end credit scene did not give us any hint of firm thing of what would be offered next. However, nothing is impossible in Hollywood. With the success of this movie, who knows there maybe something else in the future.
In term of story, to be honest my wife and I were feeling a bit bored especially the humans part. I personally felt it was made a bit too complicated with characters that seemed to be added just to show humans still have impact on the fight between the monsters. Even with quite large cast with big names I mentioned above and the additional support cast like Shun Oguri (Lupin the 3rd, Gintama live version etc), I felt they did not provide anything substantial to the story. But then again, we could not have such movie without any humans involved. Good thing all the fights were amazing and could make us disregard the other non important factors.
I said already that the monster fights were really wonderful and it could not have been done without the amazing works by the large special & visual effects department. They have done tremendous job in making the monsters look real and the fights epic. That final fight in the city of Hong Kong also reminded me of the classic Godzilla fights in Japan with tall buildings in the background, but with a much better effects making it more convincing.
In the end, this film was one that would satisfy the hunger for audience who have been looking for extreme and spectacularly done entertainment. It's the perfect pop corn movie where you could just sit back and enjoy the ride, without overthinking the weak plot and uninteresting side story. For me and my wife, we did enjoy the film and best of it all, we could watch it from the comfort of our home, even if it was a bit late. So if you want to see this movie legally without going to the cinemas, you could do so through Catchplay+, or if you prefer to see it in large screen, it is still playing in certain theaters. The choice is yours.
