Men In Black: International - A Very Light but Still Pretty Entertaining Reboot of the Popular Franchise

Due to our long holiday in Indonesia 2 weeks ago, this movie was a bit late released here. It was already shown in various countries since last week and we had seen the trailers many many times before and finally got to see it yesterday when it premiered. As usual we chose to see it in Dolby Atmos theater for the pleasure of enjoying great sound effects. Well let us get on to the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Molly Wright (Tessa Thompson - Creed 2Westworld TV series etc) was a bright & intelligent woman who was "recruited" as an agent of Men In Black in New York, led by Agent O (Emma Thompson - Howards End, Johnny English Strikes Again etc). As part of her probation period, Molly who was now called Agent M was assigned to London office under the leadership of High T (Liam Neeson - Cold PursuitA Monster Calls etc). When she finally arrived there, Agent M was somehow partnered with a highly regarded and experienced Agent H (Chris Hemsworth - 12 StrongBad Times at El Royale etc), despite the disapproval from a senior officer Agent C (Rafe Spall - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Hot Fuzz etc).

The case would take both Agent H and Agent M into a major fight with the highly skilled aliens called The Hive and involved with a dangerous arms dealer named Riza (Rebecca Ferguson - Mission Impossible: Fallout, Life etc). They also befriended with a very small wisecrack alien who later on was referred to as Pawny (voiced by Kumail Nanjiani - The Lego Ninjago Movie, The Big Sick etc).

So how would the story proceed? Find them all in this fun sci-fi action comedy movie.

End of Brief Story Line

This movie was said to be a spinoff of Men In Black series, but I thought it was more suitable to be called a reboot, since the agents from the previous trilogy did not show up in here. However, from what I understood, there was one alien who also appeared in the previous films called Frank the Pug, though I did not recall seeing him in this movie, except during the trailer (which was quite odd).

Anyway, the new agents in this movie were played by Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson who had previously appeared together in Thor: Ragnarok which might be the reason for them to have a nice chemistry. As the main lead replacing Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, these two represented a total change of characters. I thought it was also a nice inclusion of female agent in here (that joke about the organization's name was quite fun). To me personally though, the star of the large cast was definitely that funny alien Pawny. He gave so many hilarious comments sometimes at an unexpected moment. I thought it was him that truly made us audience enjoyed the movie more.

Relating to the actions, the movie had some of them but if I got to be honest, they were not really spectacular, except in the middle part where it involved the Hive aliens (played by Les Twins). I thought the finale was surprisingly too light and not what I expected from a movie of such genre, especially since this was directed by F. Gary Gray who had directed some good action movies like The Italian Job, The Fate & The Furious and few others. But the special effects did not disappoint. They were quite well done and the aliens effects were still as awesome as previous movies. It was always fun to see those various type and shapes of the aliens who lived on earth together with humans. And one more fun item was obviously the weapons these agents had.

In term of story, this one was also pretty light. There was a mystery but it was pretty predictable and did not provide any surprise to us. For a movie with duration of 115 minutes, it did not have too many complicated story so it did not feel too heavy or too long for us. I also liked the way Agent M managed to be recruited to Men In Black. Btw, there was no mid or post end credit scene. I could also understand why critics did not like this movie, due to such thin plot and probably the lack of creativity. However, if we just see this as a movie for fun, and not be bothered by those aspects, we should be able to enjoy the film like my wife and I did. We both thought it was not as bad as people made it to be.

So if you are looking for a simple & fun sci-fi action comedy movie about mysterious agents keeping the world safe for both humans and aliens, then this one should be pretty entertaining. With the hilarious Pawny as the scene stealer, plus some good visual alien effects, it should be able to satisfy you. But if you are looking for a more serious movie, with exceptional plot and story, or if you prefer the old Men In Black agents, then this might not be to your liking. The choice is yours.
