Finally after premiering for few days, my wife and I got the chance to see this movie yesterday. We had other plans on its premier date and we decided to try and see this in IMAX using the VIP vouchers that my wife got from her friend. It was a wonderful experience as we did not have to queue at all and we were given 2 nice seats in the middle of the studio which were usually kept empty for VIP guests. So how was the movie itself? More on that below.
Brief Story Line
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise - American Made, The Mummy etc) was given a new mission to acquire plutonium which would be used for terrorist attack. In order to do so, he had to make sure purchase could be done through an arms dealer called White Widow (Vanessa Kirby - Me Before You, The Crown TV series etc). Due to his earlier mission went awry, the CIA's director Erica Sloane (Angela Bassett - Black Panther, American Horror Story TV series etc) had assigned one of his best agent named Walker (Henry Cavill - Man of Steel, The Man from U.N.C.L.E etc) to "accompany" Ethan.
Together with his old team members Luther (Ving Rhames - Entrapment, Con Air etc) and Benji (Simon Pegg - Ready Player One, The World's End etc), the four of them went to Paris for their mission. As usual, they have to improvise and it would become almost impossible to complete since it would involve the person who knew of Ethan's past, Solomon Lane (Sean Harris - Macbeth, Trespass Against Us etc). Things also became more complicated when the former MI6 agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson - The Greatest Showman, The Snowman etc) came into the picture with her own agenda.
So could the mission be completed? Especially with so many hindrance and the difficulties to stop the nuclear attacks? Find them all in this exciting suspenseful full of action movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Woooow! This movie was literally very exhilarating. It was full of action from almost the beginning and throughout the whole 2 hours 47 minutes duration. Yes, it was indeed that long but my wife and I did not feel it was too long. In fact we were very satisfied as the story felt complete and everything seemed to be resolved without being too rushed. And in case I have not mentioned it frequent enough, the movie was really full of action, though some of them may have been a little bit exaggerated (Ethan Hunt seemed to be having more than 9 lives and very very fortunate), but it was done so expertly that audience could enjoy them and did not feel like being cheated by a movie.
The story itself was pretty standard Mission: Impossible style with the usual way to resolve, like the use of the rubber masks, or various technologies. Even some of the supposed "blow your mind" twist, did not surprise us anymore (to be fair, I think my wife was right, we probably have seen so many movies that we were able to guess such twists). Aside from those twists, the main attraction in here was definitely the non stop actions that involved so many absolutely amazing & thrilling scenes. My wife was so caught up in the actions that she did not even had to go to the rest room despite the very long time we had to sit in the studio. From the various action sequence, I think I loved the most the motor cycle scene in Paris and also the fight scene in Russia, plus who would not loved that totally awesome finale scene that left us breathless?
What I also loved about the movie was that it was not entirely very serious. Like its predecessor, Simon Pegg added the humorous element in the series while Ving Rhames surprisingly seemed more humane in this one. Rebecca Ferguson seemed totally capable to keep up with Tom Cruise in the action scenes. Henry Cavill was excellent and cool in here and it was exciting to see him perform something other than being Superman in DC Extended Universe. Tom Cruise? Well he was truly awesome. I read somewhere that this movie proved he could outlive us all, and I had to agree with that since he managed to perform some of the crazy stunts by himself. I remembered that he got injured during one of the scene, which said so much about his dedication to being an action movie star.
I had mentioned above that I used the VIP vouchers from my wife's friend and for the whole row, there were only 2 other couples sitting on the left end and right end of our seats. Hence it was nice to enjoy such unique experience. The IMAX studio was really great as the pictures were very clear and the sound system was fantastic. Combined with the larger screen, it truly gave us that wonderful feeling of exciting watching movie experience. The musical score was also very good, with the occasional Mission: Impossible themes playing in the right moments. And of course during the suspenseful scenes, they added the element of suspense. I think that the director Christopher McQuarrie (who previously directed Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation and Jack Reacher) had done a super job in making this movie as awesome as it was.
Overall, this was a great action movie. It had all the ingredients of a good spy movie, with few multiple twists, action sequences that were really awesome, some touching moments, brief love story and great villains. It was really worthwhile to spend more than 2 hours of your time to see this movie in theaters. The movie also had PG-13 rating which was really suitable as it did not have obscene or very violent scenes and foul language at all. It did not have any mid or post end credit scenes, so you certainly can go right to the restroom if you had been holding it for a while. If you have not seen this one, I recommend you to see this in theater (find good quality studios with good sound system to bring the most out of your experience) at the earliest.
Mike's movie moments rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
