Si Doel the Movie 2 - And the Complicated Love Triangle Continues

This would be my third Indonesian movie in a row this week as I was catching up with the films which were released last week during holiday. As my wife was a fan of the TV series (Sinetron) many years ago and also the first movie that was shown last year, she wanted to find out what would happen after that rather cliffhanger ending of Si Doel The Movie. So last night both of us bought the tickets for the 7.15 pm show in the theater near our home. It was a good thing that the movie was still playing there, otherwise we might have to go to a farther location or wait till the weekend. Anyway, let's get on with the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Set exactly after the first movie, Doel (Rano Karno - Bernafas dalam Lumpur, Romi dan Juli etc) and his uncle Mandra (Mandra) just returned from their trip to Holland. Things became really difficult for Doel when he had to face his wife Zaenab (Maudy Koesnaedi - Garuda di Dadaku, Soekarno: Indonesia Merdeka etc) and told her that he met with his love and still the official wife Sarah (Cornelia Agatha - Elegi buat Nana, Jatuh Cinta Lagi etc) with their teenager son Dul (Rey Bong).

It became even more complicated for Doel as his son was planning to come to Jakarta, while his mother MakNyak (Aminah Cendrakasih - Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang, Rumah Masa Depan TV series etc) and sister Atun (Suti Karno) were a bit worried if he would return to Sarah, leaving Zaenab.

So how would the story continue? Find them all in this quite touching love triangle drama.

End of Brief Story Line

Just like in the previous movie, this time the story was still focusing on the main lead Doel being torn between 2 seemingly impossible options that could please everyone. The conflict felt even stronger than the first film as Doel's family were more involved, increasing the difficulty for Doel. I really liked how this movie was able to maintain its pace and tone consistently, which made me feel like really watching the series all over again, except with the span of 1 year between the movies.

The formula in this movie was similar to the first one where aside from the focus of Doel's love triangle, it was also combined with the side story of Mandra which was obviously to lighten the mood, especially with his sometimes absurd and without thinking remarks. Some of the problem Doel had was also due to Mandra's inability to control his mouth. He was fun to see in every occasion which I thought was Rano Karno's foresight to provide him sufficient screen time to excel.

Almost the whole cast from the first movie reappear in here including former DJ Adam Jagwani as Sarah's brother, with a bigger portion given to the young Rey Bong as Doel's son Abdullah. Although he seemed to be a bit overwhelmed this time as his acting inexperience sometimes a bit too obvious for me and my wife. But the rest of the cast, were fantastic, even Atun's son played by Achmad Zulhoir Madia was fun to see despite only showing up for short time.

Once again the music from this movie was really nice. Just like in the first film, this time we got another lovely song accompanying us during the emotional moment almost towards the end titled "Kepastian" sung by Wizzy who also gave a surprising appearance in here. That song seemed to really set the mood for audiences who were quite affected by it like my wife and even the family man next to me. Plus that beautiful song "Selamat Jalan Kekasih" was also playing in instrumental mode, adding the sad tone. I think Rano Karno did another fine job of directing this movie. Oh before I forgot, during the end credit scene, we were shown some old photographs of the cast in the original series which should bring us that nostalgic feeling once again.

Overall this was a nice movie filled with some emotional moments, really suitable for the mature audience plus the fans of the series. I strongly believed this was not a family movie (especially for the young children who were quite a lot in the studio where we saw this film). As a second part of a trilogy, this one probably did not satisfy us if we want to see a conclusion, but it certainly set up a really intriguing finale (unless Rano Karno decided to make a 4th, 5th part and so on). With the main conflict becoming more complicated, it should be interesting to see what would be next in store. So if you enjoyed the first film, you would love this one as well.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
