(SPECIAL SCREENING) Parasite - A Really Captivating Thriller Dark Comedy Movie Worthy of Winning Palme d'Or

Once again, my wife and I were some of the fortunate people to be invited in the special screening of this critically acclaimed movie from South Korea, prior to its wide release next week. It was held in CGV Grand Indonesia last night, where I was a bit worried that it might be difficult to reach due to some road closures near the area since 2 PM. Anyway I finally arrived quite on time and the movie started at 7.30 PM. So let us see what the movie is all about.

Brief Story Line

A poor & jobless family of four that included the father Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho - Snowpiercer, A Taxi Driver etc), his wife Chung-sook (Jang Hye-jin) and their children Ki-woo (Choi Woo-sik - Train to Busan, Monstrum etc) & Ki-jung (Park So-dam - Beautiful Mind TV series etc) had to stay in a semi basement house that was not a suitable place to live.

Their lives seemed to change for the better when Ki-woo was given a job as tutor for the high school daughter of Mr. Park (Lee Sun-kyun - A Hard Day, Coffee Prince TV series etc) & Mrs. Park (Cho Yeo-jeong - Obsessed, I Need Romance TV series etc). However, it did not take long before they all would be involved in things they never thought would be happening to them.

So how would the story conclude? Find them all in this amazingly done thriller black comedy movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Wow, this was indeed an awesome movie. For 2+ hours we were all so captivated by the storytelling and we were kept wondering of what would happen next to this lovable family. To be honest, I did not know anything about the movie and had not even seen its trailer before, so I was unsure on the premise at all. But apparently it was a good choice because it kept me excited almost the entire film.

The main attraction of this movie was definitely the plot which I thought was really intelligently done. When the film started for a while about the introduction of the family, I was thinking at first that it seemed like a dark comedy film, but as the story progressed, it became clear it would be a lot more than that. Then suddenly something sparked and the movie became a lot more suspenseful and intense with a wonderful conclusion which was unpredictable to most of the audience.

Aside from the great story, it would not have been wonderful had it not been for the cast performance. I was totally in awe with all the cast who played this family. Every one of them were so convincing in each of their roles. I was also amazed by the performance of the Cho Yeo-jong who was so believable as the gullible Mrs. Park. Even the additional supporting cast were so great as well. Oh there was also a cameo appearance from a quite well known TV actor in this movie which was a nice surprise for fans of Korean series.

From what I read, this movie had won the 2019 Palme d'Or (the highest award in Cannes Film Festival) which I could totally understand, seeing how well executed this film was. I am not one that's really particular about the technical elements of a movie but I gotta say that the director Bong Joon-ho was quite extraordinary in his movie making. Not to mention he was also the writer and screenplay (which was pretty amazing that he could have this kind of idea). Oh, the cinematography was also really beautiful (some scenes showing the sun shone through the window, or the contrasting condition of Ki-taek's family with Park's family), plus the musical score was great as well.

During the running of the film, my wife and I were so serious in watching it that we managed to hold going to the bathroom till the very end. For me personally, there was a scene which felt a bit too long, but as a whole it was not really a big deal. Btw there was also scene which was definitely only suitable for adults, so when the movie is released widely, audience should restrict themselves from bringing their young ones. Although there is also possibility it might not pass the censorship body anyway.

Overall, my wife and I and all the audience were really satisfied. We were amazed and loved the movie. One of those rare beautiful award winning movie which did not feel too heavy despite having a huge moral message. This was a movie that would certainly live in our memory for a long time. So if you are into this kind of genre, be sure to see this one next week. (Update: The movie won the prestigious Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Director plus Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and many many more accolades).

Mike's movie moments rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
