Cold Pursuit - Not Your Average Liam Neeson's Action Movie

Last Friday, this movie premiered in the largest Indonesian cinema chain but it did not play in the theater near our home. And I was not really in the mood to go far just to see the movie, not when it was a not-so-new movie anyway. So when it did play in that particular cinema, my wife and I bought the tickets for last night's show at 7.05 PM. Well let us move on with the film.

Brief Story Line

Nels Coxman (Liam Neeson - The Commuter, Taken trilogy etc) was just a regular guy who worked as cleaner of the snow on the roads of Kehoe city and living peacefully with his wife Grace (Laura Dern - Star Wars: The Last Jedi etc). However their lives were torn apart when their only son was mixed up with a major cocaine distributors led by Trevor aka Viking (Tom Bateman - Murder on the Orient Express etc). Nels made it his mission to personally destroy Viking and all his men responsible for destroying their lives.

Meanwhile a local police officer Kim (Emmy Rossum - The Phantom of the Opera etc) suspected that the murders of Viking's men was somehow related to another drug gang led by a native American named White Bull (Tom Jackson) and worried that it might become a drug war.

So what would happen to Nels and how would the story conclude? Find them all in this quite interesting drama action movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well this was definitely not the standard Liam Neeson movie. To be honest, I wanted to see him show his tough guy action in this movie like in his previous films, but this one was unlike any of those. Yes we got to see some of his actions few times but I was really irritated seeing some of them were cut by the Indonesian censorship body. I was disappointed since I am quite sure there were many more movies which were definitely a lot more violent than this but they were not censored. It was a bit of double standard to my personal opinion.

Anyway, besides the not so much action, the movie itself felt a lot more drama with some touches of very dark comedy. There were few moments where we could chuckled a bit or at least grinned to one or two scenes. And apart from those, we also could see the irony (as what my wife noticed), of Nels Coxman as the "best citizen" of Kehoe but he went on doing various violent actions.

The story itself was not that complicated but it was told in a rather slow pace with few scenes that I sometime felt a bit overly long. Furthermore, the editing seemed to be a bit rough in some scenes. There were quite a lot of characters shown in here which were given little screen time but one or two moments gave a bit of amusing or surprising feeling for us. And that brief scene of showing the name of deceased people was quite a fun touch. Even the early part of the end credit scene was also unique if you paid attention to it. Of all the characters shown in this movie, the one that left me a good impression was Brock aka Wingman played by William Forsythe (The Rock, Stone Cold etc). I was also impressed by the appearance of the young actor playing Viking's son.

Overall I thought this was a unique drama action movie. Those looking for the standard Liam Neeson's full action, suspenseful and thrilling film would not get it in here. But if you are fans of movie which focused on the story or the dark comedy type, you might be able to enjoy this a lot. The choice is yours.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Note:
This movie was a remake of a Norwegian movie titled In Order of Disappearance starring Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd which was highly regarded by critics and directed by Hans Peter Molland who happened to be the person directing this film.
