X-Men: Dark Phoenix - A Decent X-Men Movie Focusing on Jean Grey but Probably not the Best Finale in the Series

This film was rather late released in Indonesia. Due to the holiday season last week, it was only premiering yesterday together with another movie. I opted to see this one first in my favorite Dolby Atmos cinema to enjoy the sound effects and continue with the other one at a different cinema. Without further ado, here's more details on the movie.

Brief Story Line

Set in the year 1992, the mutants were better received now as the X-Men under the leadership of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy - GlassSplit etc) that included mutants such as Raven aka Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence - MotherPassengers etc), Hank McCoy/Beast (Nicholas Hoult - About a Boy, Mad Max: Fury Road etc),  Scott Summers/Cyclops (Tye Sheridan - Ready Player Oneetc), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner - Game of Thrones TV series, Barely Lethal etc), Storm (Alexandra Shipp - Straight Outta Compton etc), Night Crawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee - Alpha etc), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters - American Horror Story series etc).

After one of their missions, Jean was exposed to some dark matter which would transform her into one of the strongest mutant but at the same time very difficult to control her powers. With the appearance of the mysterious beings called Vuk and their leader (Jessica Chastain - The Huntsman: Winter's War, Zero Dark Thirty etc), the X-Men would have to fight for their lives to save everyone. And things got further complicated with Magneto (Michael Fassbender - Assassin's Creed, 12 Years a Slave etc) into the picture.

So how would the story conclude? Find them all in this final X-Men movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Now I know that this movie was not very well received by critics as well as general audience, but for me this one did not feel that bad. Yes, there were some moments which were having quite slow pace and might feel boring for those action & thrill seeking people, but the action sequence was pretty well done. Though I gotta admit that the actions might be lesser than I had hoped for. The actions in early part was quite suspenseful and the finale was pretty awesome.

From what I understood, this was said to be the final movie in the X-Men first class series that started in the year 2011. And it would look to be the case, especially since 20th Century Fox as the owner of the Intellectual Property of X-Men was acquired by Disney and rumor has it that X-Men might be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in future. So I could understand people's wish to have this concluded with a bang and giving an emotional feeling, but it was not really the case. The emotion part towards the end was not really felt, probably because it was too short? It had 114 minutes duration which included a seemingly endless closing credits, but having no mid or post end credit scene.

The special effects in here were amazing with the climax fight scenes the best ones for me personally and the sound effects were fantastic. The background music was pretty good during the actions, but funnily enough it did not seem to be that good during the supposed touching moment. It was rather weird since there was a well known name of Hans Zimmer in musical score area (famous for films like The Lion King, Inception, The Dark Knight and many more).

The story itself was a bit predictable especially in the end, but there was a very surprising twist that caught me off guard. As the focus of this movie was Jean Grey, it was not weird if she and Professor Xavier who was her mentor got the most screen time, which meant the rest of the mutants would not be in the spotlight and might not develop emotional attachments with the audience. However, Michael Fassbender did provide a really commanding presence as Magneto and he was absolutely great when he showed his magnificent ability (definitely my wife's favorite mutant in here).

I said above that I thought the actions in the early part and the finale were awesome. But if I had to compare with the finale fight of X-Men: Apocalypse or its predecessors, it was probably not as intense as those. The one thing that I thought successfully did in this movie was the way it changed my views of the character Jean Grey whom apparently was a very powerful mutant. This was definitely an improvement from X-Men:The Last Stand which did not give too much portion of Jean Grey's development into the Dark Phoenix.

Overall it was quite entertaining to see this movie with its action plus cool visual effects, though for a final X-men movie, it might not live up to its expectation. It did not provide the most emotional moment as a finale but more like a connecting film to the concluding final movie. So if you want to see another X-Men movie with some cool actions and special effects, then this one should entertain you. Just do not view this as the final movie expecting such wonderful conclusion for the X-Men, but look at it as another episode with the focus on Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix.
