Brief Story Line
When a coup happened in the country of Corto Maltese, agent Waller (Viola Davis - How to Get Away with Murders TV series, The Help etc) decided to recruit team of ex convicts once again who were referred to as Task Force X aka Suicide Squad. Due to the extent of the danger, there were plenty of them recruited. The team itself was led by Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman - The Informer, Altered Carbon TV series etc).
Some of the team members who were recruited were Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie - Birds of Prey, Peter Rabbit etc), Savant (Michael Rooker - Love and Monsters etc), Robert Dubois/Bloodsport (Idris Elba - The Dark Tower, Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw etc), Peacemaker (John Cena - Playing With Fire, Ferdinand etc), King Shark (portrayed by Steve Agee and voiced by Sylvester Stallone - Rambo: Last Blood, Escape Plan: The Extractors etc), Polka-dot Man (David Dastmalchian - Ant-man and the Wasp etc), Ratchet 2 (Daniela Melchior) and few others.
So what would happen to the team of these misfits as they worked on this special mission? You can find them all in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
And that was absolute madness. I heard that the movie was different compared to the previous Suicide Squad, but I never realized it was so distinct. The significant difference was certainly on the violence which was much more apparent in this sequel with blood spattering all over the place and cameras, plus the graphic detail of the killings (especially ones involving King Shark). The first movie has some humor, but this time the humor felt a bit fresh, like the banter between Bloodsport and Peacemaker, the Polka-dot Man's unique views on other people and the funny character of Nanaue/King Shark (my wife's favorite character in here).
The members of the team were a lot more compared to the first film, although not all of them have major screen time. In addition to those I mentioned above, there were also few more familiar names like Nathan Fillion (Castle TV series etc) as TDK, Jai Courtney (Jack Reacher etc) as Captain Boomerang, Alice Braga (I Am Legend etc) as Sol Soria, Peter Capaldi (Paddington etc) as the Thinker and even Taika Waititi. In general the whole cast did their job adequately. But the ones that caught our attention would be Margot Robbie (still perfect as the psychotic Harley Quinn) and John Cena.
The story itself started off pretty simple. It's only a bunch of convicts/villains recruited by government agent to do the almost impossible mission that required their unique abilities. However, the story telling was done well enough to make it interesting. I liked the way they showed some writings using things on the set such as the fire from car accident, blood draining from some victims, but the most incredible one would be the last which showed the words Jotunheim towards the end. That made me and my wife felt in awe of their creativity.
Another thing that we both liked would have to be the action sequence. They were entertaining, even if sometimes very brutal. I really love the climax fight which was supported by amazing special effects. Oh there was an interesting post-end credit scene which should not be missed, as it would explain the basis for having a new TV series in future. I thought James Gunn did well in making this movie enjoyable and I could understand the critics fondness of this movie as well.
Overall it was an interesting action anti-hero movie. It was said to be a standalone sequel of the 2016 movie as in no connection except for some people from the original film who still appeared in this film. Even though it is set in DCEU, there did not seem to be any direct connections with other movies in the universe. The film has some elements of humor, engaging characters, crazy action sequence with awesome finale, and it was shockingly very violent. As this is not a brand new movie and perhaps lots of people have seen it in the cinema, I think there is no need for recommending it to audience anymore. But for those who did not get the chance like me and my wife back then, you can watch this in certain streaming platforms.
