Thor: Love and Thunder - A Hilarious Comedy Superhero Movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

After playing few days in the theaters, my wife and I finally saw this one yesterday as the timing to see it in our favorite Dolby Atmos theater during weekdays was not suitable for us. I insisted on going to the cinema with such sound system as it is quite rare nowadays to have movies released in Indonesia having that sound effect. OK, why don't I go straight to the movie then.

Brief Story Line

After the events of Avengers: End Game, Thor (Chris Hemsworth - SpiderheadBad Times at El Royale etc) who joined Guardians of the Galaxy for some time, decided to go on separate ways when he heard about some imminent danger threatening the Gods. Together with his friend Krogg (Taika Waititi - Free Guy etc) they found out that it was Gorr (Christian Bale - Ford v Ferrari, Vice etc) who had been on a personal vendetta on the Gods and killing them.

With a powerful weapon on his hands, Gorr was very difficult to beat, and hence Thor decided to seek the help from Asgard King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson - Creed 2Westworld TV series etc) and later on joined by his old love interest, Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman - Star Wars Episode 1-3, Black Swan etc).

So how would the story conclude? You can find them all in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

After seeing this movie, I was pretty surprised at first with the rather dark tone. But subsequently when Thor appeared with the Guardians of the Galaxy, then it changed drastically to very light and full of comedic moments. My wife and I together with the audience kept on laughing many times throughout the movie due to the hilarious circumstances arising from various situations. One particularly funny thing was relating to the goats that always made my wife laughed very hard.

Aside from the fun times, the movie also had some nice action sequence, obviously helped by the awesome special effects, including the wonderful CGI that did look really good. I liked the sight at the Shadow Realm which felt quite stylish (You'll know what I meant if you have seen it). The make up effects were amazing too. And of course the sound effects made it more enjoyable as well. Although if I have to be critical, the action were not the really spectacular type, but nevertheless still good.

The familiar cast were fine as usual with some having more screen time than the rest. Other than the names I mentioned above, we also got very brief appearance of people from the original Thor trilogy such as Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings and Stellan Skarsgård as Sif, Darcy and Eric respectively plus few cameo from well known names. One major star was Russell Crowe (The Mummy 2017 version, The Insider etc) who was unrecognizable by me and my wife (who was upset with his appearance here as it kind of ruin her image of the character he played). The one that really caught our attention was definitely Christian Bale who was just incredible. Once again it showed that he is truly an outstanding actor. This also brought a bit of fresh air in MCU as usually the villains were pretty straight forward bad guy, unlike Gorr who was more complex.

This movie was directed by Taika Waititi who also brought the freshness when he did it during Thor: Ragnarok. Although compared to that one, this was not that well received by critics. Regardless though, pretty sure the film would definitely break some records commercially again with fans of Marvel cinematic universe still going to the theater to see this. Unlike in the 2nd Doctor Strange movie, this one did not have many very surprising Marvel comic characters, so it might be less satisfactory for people who just want to find out about it. Btw, the film has a duration of around 2 hours with 1 mid end credit scene that was interesting and 1 post end credit scene that ended with personally surprising very last words shown on screen.

Overall this was an entertaining movie for me and I believe most of the audience. We had so much laughs during the film and love the interaction between Thor & Jane and we also liked Krogg who provided plenty of fun moments too. There were also a lot of familiar songs (specifically from Guns N' Roses which would please audience who love their songs) that were played few times in the background. I also like the ending of the film as it was not a cliché (as my wife said). I myself enjoyed this movie a lot because of the fun element, though it might not be a spectacular superhero film. Which made me feel this is more of a comedy superhero movie rather than superhero movie with some comedy. So if you are fine with having a lot of comedic moments in a superhero film, then you would love this one. But if your preference is more great action, you might feel this to be a bit inadequate. The choice is yours.
