Army of Thieves - Fun & Interesting Heist Movie with Lighter Tone Set in the Army of the Dead Universe

Yesterday this new movie was released on Netflix. I have known about this one for several weeks now, which is a prequel to that interesting film Army of the Dead few months ago. It definitely was intriguing since the focus was one of the characters who I have grown attached to. So once I got the chance last night, I immediately start watching it. OK, let's get on with it.

Brief Story Line

Some time before the events of that earlier movie, Dieter who was still going by his old name Sebastian (Matthias Schweighöfer) was working as a bank teller and feeling bored with his life. That was until he met Gwen (Nathalie Emmanuel - The Fate of the Furious, Four Weddings and a Funeral miniseries etc) who noticed Sebastian's ability to crack safe.

Gwen recruited Sebastian to be part of her crew together with the other members like the muscle Brad Cage (Stuart Martin), the driver Rolph (Guz Khan) and the hacker Korina (Ruby O. Fee) to do a heist on some world's most difficult safe to crack. As they started to do these heists, the Interpol agents led by Inspector Delacroix (Jonathan Cohen) were trying to capture them.

So how would the story conclude? You can find them all in this interesting and quite fun heist movie.

End of Brief Story Line

When I started watching this movie, I somehow felt it's going to be a little bit light compared to Army of the Dead. And as I continued, it apparently did feel light till the end. There was not a lot of drama and since the lead cast was the character who was rather socially awkward, the feeling that I had was a bit of sympathy to Sebastian, especially when he found himself to be attracted to the woman way out of his league and his personal quest to "conquer" the legendary safes.

But as the story progressed, that sympathy turned to supportive of Sebastian's newfound adventure & friends and made me enjoy the movie better. Because there was a series of heists, it was definitely enjoyable to see how they would do it. I liked the first heist the most as it managed to combine the intelligence and there was a bit of comedic side. The subsequent heists were more suspenseful. In general they were not the totally complicated type of heists, although it was still entertaining to see them.

The cast of this movie did their job quite well. Obviously I like Matthias Schweighöfer's performance as this very likable character, whereas Nathalie Emmanuel fit her role perfectly. Her chemistry with Matthias was fun to watch. Oh Jonathan Cohen was also very suitable as the Interpol inspector looking to catch the team who eluded him few times. It looks to me that the cast here are European which I thought was the correct choice because the film's setting was in Europe. I like how they managed to link with the zombie outbreak that will be the base of the events of Army of the Dead.

The film has a duration of 127 minutes which seemed pretty long but I think was OK seeing that there were series of heists to be performed. There was no mid or post end credit scene. Btw, originally I thought this film would also be quite stylish like its sequel, but then it hit me that the film was not directed by Zack Snyder but by Matthias Schweighöfer himself. Although it might not have that kind of quality, but it was still an entertaining movie. Oh Zack Snyder did contribute in the film as one of the producers and as co-writer together with Shay Hatten.

Overall to me this was a fun movie. It has some unique heists performed by people who were not too serious while being chased by the Interpol. There was a bit of comedy and romance, while the zombies here were very limited and more like background only. And because of the lack of zombies and the lighter tone, this is not a violent movie which would explain the rating for 16+ only due to language. Now if you are interested in a heist movie with the above attributes, then this one will be enjoyable. However, if your preference is zombie survival movie, or a serious complicatedly done heist movie with lots of twists, then it might not be to your liking. The choice is yours.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
