Don't Breathe 2 - Not a Better Sequel in term of Story but Definitely More Brutal and Violent

I found out about this movie only few weeks ago and was surprised there was even a sequel of the 2016 hit Don't Breathe. But as I truly enjoyed the original film, my wife and I both thought it would be an exciting experience to see it in the cinema. The movie was only released in Indonesian theaters 2 days ago, while it has its wide release in the US in August. All right, here's more on the movie.

Brief Story Line

Set few years after the events of the first movie, the blind man Norman (Stephen Lang - Braven, Public Enemies etc) now lived with a young girl called Phoenix (Madelyn Grace) who referred him as her father. Phoenix was given survival training and home schooled by Norman. She seldom get out except when Norman's acquaintance Hernandez (Stephanie Arcila) brought her to town.

Norman and Phoenix peaceful life was disturbed when a group of ex armies led by Raylan (Brendan Sexton III) took an interest on Phoenix. As they tried to capture her at Norman's home, he did whatever he could to protect Phoenix from danger.

So how would the story conclude? Find them all in this suspenseful and intense horror thriller movie.

End of Brief Story Line

OK that was really fun. It was a movie sequel that delivered almost as much fun as the original. During around 1.5 hour duration of the film, my wife and I were entertained by the intensity and also the suspense which were almost nonstop ever since the appearance of the bad guys. This time though, the blind man was surprisingly the protagonist who only tried to protect the girl.

However, despite having a lot of action and intense moments, I could not help feeling that the story here was not really that good. There seemed to be a lot of extreme plots and Norman was portrayed like a guy with super everything which did not feel normal. Unlike in the original movie where the plot was simple but still quite logical. The action though was amazing and aided by a good quality sound effects from the theater, made this an awesome experience.

Due to the villains were portrayed as totally bad guys, my wife and I were really rooting for the blind man and we were delighted whenever he managed to overcome them. The violence here were really gruesome and extreme with many graphic scenes. The killings were absolutely brutal using items that would deliver the utmost pain, making the film sometimes felt like a slasher horror type as it was quite gore as well. Btw, the movie had a surprising ending that I did not see coming. Oh there was an interesting brief post end credit here which you can see if you wait till the very end.

So if you ask if this movie is good, I would probably say not. But if you ask if we enjoyed it, then the answer would be "Absolutely". It has the intensity, suspense, truly bad villains and unique protagonist which made for an interesting plot. And the young Madelyn Grace performed her role fantastically as she was more than able playing alongside Stephen Lang (who still felt perfect as the veteran blind guy with a conscience). If you are looking for a really violent movie of bad guy fighting against worse guys while trying to protect his loved one, then this would be to your liking. But if you cannot stand the sight of such gruesome violence, then better avoid this film.
