(TV SERIES) Hellbound - Another South Korean Series Having Unique Premise based on Webtoon

On Friday, there were a bunch of new movies as well as TV series released on Netflix. Actually I've had my eyes on another series but this one also caught my attention. And I finally decided to watch this South Korean series first as it was having only 6 episodes which should not take a lot of time to finish. This time my wife accompanied me watching it. OK will get to it now.

Brief Story Line

Set in the near future, some scary creatures suddenly appeared to drag sinners to hell after they have been prophesized before. A religious cult called the New Truth led by Jung Jinsu (Yoo Ah-in - Sungkyungkwan Scandal, Secret Affair TV series etc) came to prominent as they seemed to know about the strange phenomenon and encouraged people not to commit a sin to avoid being bound to hell. Detective Kyunghun (Yang Ik-june - Breathless etc) was assigned to investigate this disturbing case.

Meanwhile an attorney named Min Hye-jin (Kim Hyun-joo - Miss Kim's Million Dollar Quest, I Have a Lover TV series etc) was one of the most vocal person against the cult. As the New Truth gained more popularity, they went on to make TV documentary despite the reluctance of one of its producer, Bae Young-jae (Park Jeong-min - Deliver Us From Evil, Entourage TV series etc). However, his wife Song So-hyun (Won Jin-ah - Rain or Shine TV series etc) was a true believer.

So how would the story conclude? You can find out in this dark drama series.

End of Brief Story Line

After watching few interesting Netflix original South Korean drama series, I have become quite attracted with them as they have some of the most unique premises. This time around, the plot felt like one of a kind. From what I understand, it is actually based on webtoon of the same title, written by Yeong San-ho who happens to be the director of this series as well. I guess being the writer, made him able to translate the message he wanted to deliver. Btw, Yeong San-ho was the director of that awesome movie Train to Busan and its sequel Peninsula

The series opened up with something really exciting and truly suspenseful. Despite people's criticism of poor effects of the creatures, I personally felt they were adequate. It might not be spectacular but decent enough to my opinion. Anyway the story developed in rather slow manner but the darkness was felt throughout. And it became really intense after we were shown the next person who was prophesized. The mysterious nature of the Hell Executioners was what made the series interesting, especially in the first half.

What truly surprised me and my wife though was the complete change of direction in the middle of the series. It was certainly not common but still managed to make us intrigued of what would come next. As I continued watching till the final episode, I came to a conclusion that this is not a totally supernatural/horror series like what the trailer suggest, but instead a drama with some supernatural events occurred in the background that would have impact on the social aspect of human life.

Nevertheless though, I was still entertained by the story. It has an amazing and emotional ending with shocking twists that my wife and I did not see coming. Both of us also felt that even though it seemed like it had proper conclusion, but there was also room to make a second season should they chose to do so. The cast generally performed their roles well enough to make us feel engaged with them. In addition to the names I mentioned above, there were also support characters who left deep impression such as deacon Yuji (Ryu Kyung-soo - Itaewon Class etc), Park Jeong-ja (Kim Shin-rok - Beyond Evil TV series etc), a really annoying character of the Arrowhead's mascot and few others.

For a series of only 6 episodes, to me this one sufficiently covered the story and it did not feel rushed. Those of you who are looking for a thriller with full of suspense series, you might not really find it here as it was not the main focus. However, if you are OK with a drama that challenge the basis of faith, then this should fit nicely. Be warned though that there are some scenes having heavy violence that might be truly disturbing.
