Venom: Let There Be Carnage - A More Compact Sequel and Entertaining Anti-hero Movie in Spider-man Universe

After few days playing in Indonesian cinemas, my wife and I finally got the chance to see this movie in the theater. But due to some reasons, we were unable to go to my favorite theater with Dolby Atmos system and we went to the one based on convenience and availability instead. Anyway, let's get more to it now.

Brief Story Line

After the events in Venom, Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy - The Dark Knight Rises, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy etc) managed to get an interview session with serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson - KateZombieland: Double Tap etc) which revived his career. However, Eddie's relationship with his ex fiancee Anne Weying (Michelle Williams - The Greatest Showman, Shutter Island etc) was not getting any better.

Meanwhile, due to some reasons, Cletus somehow got close contact with the symbiote that made him became powerful and called himself Carnage. The police detective Mulligan (Stephen Graham - Boardwalk Empire TV series etc) suspected it might have something to do with Eddie. But both of them later deduced that Cletus might be searching for his old girlfriend Frances Barrison (Naomie Harris - No Time to Die etc).

With everything on the line, Eddie had no choice but to work together with Venom to save the city. So how would the story conclude? Find them all in this exciting antihero movie.

End of Brief Story Line

You know my wife and I both were surprised by the short duration of the movie (only 97 minutes) which made it very short compared to other comic book adaptation movies. It was even shorter than its predecessor. But after seeing the whole movie, we thought that it was actually pretty compact. The story did not take too long to get to the really interesting part, as there was no introduction really needed anymore and we were just shown the amusing relationship between Eddie and Venom (which made us laugh few times).

However, the movie became totally exciting once Carnage appeared. After that, the movie became intense and very suspenseful. It was totally amazing looking at Carnage wreaking havoc, and even better when Frances Barrison came into the picture. I really love the way they complimented each other and what I loved the most was definitely the finale fight. It was totally satisfying as it combined some awesome fights and humor. Plus Woody Harrelson seemed perfect as the irritating villain (not the kind who gave the eerie feeling of a serial killer but more like an annoying opposite of Eddie Brock).

The visual effects in this movie was fantastic. The effects created for Venom and Carnage were really great and they looked real lifelike. The sound effects even though not as spectacular as what it must be like if I watched in theater with Dolby Atmos system, but it was still adequate. Just like in the first movie, the commanding voice of Venom was perfect and with the addition of Carnage, it made it even more impressive.

Another thing that made me and my wife enjoyed the movie was definitely the humorous Venom, with his odd relationship with Eddie that made them looked like a married couple. The music also fit in nicely, especially the one accompanying us during the closing credit. Btw, there was a surprising but really important mid end credit scene which seemed to hint at what the future may hold for Venom. Oh the movie was categorized as PG-13, likely as there was no profound language and no heavy graphic violence of blood spattering all over.

Overall this movie was definitely entertaining if you like Venom's character as a real anti-hero with his preference for solving problems using violence. Having a compact story and high intensity plus good visual effects certainly help making it more enjoyable. Btw, I was a bit surprised looking at the name of Andy Serkis as the director since I knew him mostly for portraying unique characters in various movies like Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy or Caesar in the latest Planet of the Apes trilogy. Anyway I thought he did a good job in here. So if you already liked Venom from the first movie, then you would surely like him in the sequel.
