Follow Me - A Thriller Movie Combining Aspects from Other Franchises with a Fine Ending

Yesterday my wife and I decided to see another movie that was just released few days earlier, making it another movie marathon day for us. It intrigued me especially because of the premise. Without further ado, here's more on the movie.

Brief Story Line

A vlogger named Cole Turner (Keegan Allen - Pretty Little Liars TV series etc) was famous for taking on various challenges by his followers. While celebrating the 10th anniversary of his video channel, he was invited to do an escape room challenge together with his girlfriend Erin (Holland Roden - Escape Room: Tournament of Champions etc) and their best friends Dash (George Janko), Samantha (rapper Siya) and Thomas (Denzel Whitaker - The Great Debaters etc).

This time, the event would be held in Moscow as they were invited by a big fan of Cole, a wealthy Russian billionaire named Alexei (Ronen Rubinstein - 9-1-1: Lone Star TV series etc). What Cole and the rest of his friends did not realize were the danger they were in when they were doing the challenge.

So what would happen to them? Find out in this thriller movie.

End of Brief Story Line

This movie seemed to be taking it slow in the beginning as it focused a lot on the introduction of the characters and showing how famous Cole was as an internet celebrity. Personally I thought it took a bit too long to reach to the interesting part. Fortunately though, once the escape room challenge started, it was quite intense. The intensity also grew as the story progressed, which made it felt exciting and suspenseful.

What made me and my wife quite enjoy the movie was the ending. Even though there was a feeling on my side personally of how it would be, I always have doubt whether my guessing was correct. And that real ending still manage to shock us, but we felt it was justified. The film only has duration of 1.5 hour and it has an interesting revelations during the closing credits. However, it did not have any post end credit scene.

The young cast in here were mostly unfamiliar to me and my wife, except for Holland Roden as we just saw her in another movie (believe it or not) Escape Room 2. Oh there was also another actor Pasha D. Lychnikoff (Siberia etc) whom I recognized as he frequently appeared as Russian mobster. But the rest of them were unknown to us.

The premise of the movie seemed to combine 2 quite successful franchise. One obviously was Escape Room and another one was a trilogy of film which if I mentioned here would have made you understand about the plot. But if you are curious, the film starred Jay Hernandes. Anyway, probably because of the nature of the movie's plot, it has another title of "No Escape" in certain countries. Btw, this is actually a 2020 movie which likely got delayed in the release due to the pandemic.

For a thriller movie, this one was thrilling enough. It might not be spectacular one but still pretty entertaining for me and my wife. Although the ending probably could have been guessed by some, it was quite satisfying for us. There were one or two jump scare scenes and disturbing scenes which would explain the 17+ rating in Indonesian cinemas. So if you are interested in watching a thriller movie such as this one, and as long as you are patient enough to wait till the suspenseful moment, this one should be enjoyable enough. But do not expect this to be a high quality thriller film as it is not up to that high calibre.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
