Escape Room: Tournament of Champions - Sequel to the Interesting 2019 Thriller Movie

Yesterday there were 2 new movies released in various Indonesian cinemas (including the one very near our home). I have mentioned in one of my previous posts that my wife and I would see new movies as and when we were able to see it. As it was very convenient for us, we opted to see this film last night. So let's just get to it then.

Brief Story Line

After the events from Escape Room, the survivors of the game Zoey (Taylor Russel - Lost in Space TV series etc) and Ben (Logan Miller - Prey etc) decided to pursue Minos organization and expose their cruelty. However, before they could get to them, somehow Zoey and Ben were trapped in another series of life and death games together with other people including Rachel (Holland Roden - Teen Wolf TV series etc), Nathan (Thomas Cocquerel), Brianna (Indya Moore - Pose TV series etc) and Theo (Carlito Olivero) from different backgrounds.

And now everyone must try to find out the ways to escape the rooms and save themselves.

So how would the story conclude? Find them all in this still exciting and suspenseful movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well that was fun. My wife and I were enjoying ourselves watching this movie where suspense was the main focus. I was actually quite surprised that it did not take long to get to the fun part, which I thought was a smart move, since there was no more requirement to introduce us to the rules of the games and the people. Even though some were new characters, but we got to know them through simple conversation, yet somehow we were pretty engaged with most of them.

Just like in the original movie, this time we got to see people trapped in several rooms where they had to escape using their wit and fast thinking. My wife and I chuckled as we believe if we were the ones trapped, we would probably just give up. Funny thing about the games, both of us felt similarities to the games we used to play on the computer (or now tablets), where we have to combine one or more items to make into an equipment that we could use to open certain doors and move to the next level.

The movie itself was not having long duration (only 88 minutes). There was no mid or post end credit scenes. However, from what I read on the internet, there were actually alternate endings to this movie which were completely different from the one released on the theater. Btw, I do not really think this film was very violent, despite there were some deaths involved. Which is likely the reason it was not rated R in the US, although it was classified for 17+ in Indonesia.

The cast here were generally OK. As I said above, even though the introduction was done very briefly, but it was enough for us. From the ending of the film, it certainly hinted for another sequel. The movie was directed by the same director of the original, i.e. Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan, Insidious: The Last Key etc) which would explain the similar intense feel. Oh I also found out that critics did not really like this one as they said the movie was not really an upgrade or incredibly stupid. Well for us, despite those harsh comments, we still pretty much enjoyed it because of the suspense and we did not really mind the other factors.

So if you like the original film, you should be entertained by the fast pace & intensity on how to escape the different various insane rooms. I only wished there could have been another room to escape as I thought the film was a bit too short. But if you prefer to believe the critics, then might as well skip it. The choice is yours.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
