Husbands in Action - A Light and Fun Enough Action Comedy Though not the Most Memorable Movie

This week had been a joy for Netflix subscribers like me with so many interesting new movies and series which made me spend the past few days just finishing them one by one. On Friday night, I watched this South Korean film that was just released on the same day. It has a seemingly light & fun premise which was exactly what I was looking for after completing a suspenseful series. Without further ado, here's more on the film.

Brief Story Line

Hwang Choong-sik (Jin Seon-kyu - UprisingSpace Sweepers etc) was a narcotics detective who had been eyeing to stop the distribution of drugs by the group of drug dealers led by Do-jun (Kim Ji-seok - The Sleepless, When The Camellia Blooms TV series etc) and his intelligent wife Hye-ran (Lee Da-hee - S Line TV series, The Divorce Insurance  etc). However his mission brought danger to his ex-wife Si-nae (Kang Han-na - Ca$hero TV series, Empire of Lust etc) and their daughter who were kidnapped.

In order to save them, Choong-sik had no choice but to work together with Si-nae's new husband, the veterinarian Lee Min-seok (Gong Myung - Extreme JobMercy for None TV series etc) as they were not allowed to inform the police. Obviously it was a difficult task with their completely different characteristics. Things gotten more complicated with the appearance of old drug lord named Yong Gang (Yoon Kyung-ho - My Daughter Is a ZombieLove Reset etc) who was trying to get back into the game by taking over Do-jun's business.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well honestly I was hoping to have a lot of laughters watching this movie. However turned out that although there were moments that I could smiled or chuckled, but sometimes the humor felt a bit cringe, including one moment involving feet that I do not think my wife would appreciate if she watch this. Yup, this time I watched the movie earlier than her as she was still finishing her other K-drama. Anyway, despite those shortcomings, the film itself was still enjoyable. It's not bad but then again it's not extraordinary & memorable either.

The two main characters were quite OK with completely different personality who were forced to work together. But the thing that made it interesting was mid way through the film when something changed the dynamic of the characters. There were some interesting action here and there with the finale which was pretty good. However the car chase in the middle was a bit too much personally for me even if they looked well executed. The director Park Gyu-tae (6/45, Bunt etc) was also credited as writer together with Kim Jong-hyun. The movie had a duration of 107 minutes and there was a brief mid end-credit scene shortly after the title was shown in the end showing a surprise cameo. I think it was a scene just for fun and not likely a teaser for sequel.

The main cast here were pretty good with Jin Seon-kyu who was no stranger to comedy films. This also marked his reunion with Gong Myung. Aside from the ones I said above, there were also appearances of Jeon So-min (Eighteen Youth, Cleaning Up TV series etc) as A-Ra the journalist, Oh Eun-so (Perfect Family TV series etc) as Choong-sik and Si-nae's daughter Yeon-su, Lee Soon-won (The Wonderfools mini series, Land of Happiness etc) as Police Chief and few others as the goofy Yong Gang's thugs. From what I could see, the film seemed to be pretty well received in Indonesia, already making it to number 2 after just two days of release. Not sure about what critics were saying though at the time of my writing.

Overall this was a pretty fun action comedy film with some moments where you could laugh and few action scenes. The main attraction was definitely the collaboration of the main characters and the story development that change their dynamics. There were few well executed fight scenes but do not expect them to be the explosive, awesome high octane action sequence. So if you are looking for light action comedy just for fun, then you can certainly give it a try. But if you prefer a truly well developed and high quality kind of movie, this might not be to your satisfaction.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3 out of 5 stars
