My Daughter is a Zombie - Melodramatic Zombie Comedy Movie Based on Popular Webtoon

Last week this movie was already having the Advance Ticket Sales program. Since my wife is a major fan of the lead star, obviously she did not want to miss out and immediately purchased two tickets for Friday's show, which was also the first day of its release. So few hours ago we went to see this in the cinema a bit further away from our usual location. OK why don't I get started then?

Brief Story Line

When South Korea was hit with a virus that made people sick and became zombies, Lee Jung-hwan (Jo Jung-suk - Pilot Captivating the King TV series etc) and his teenaged daughter Soo-ah (Choi Yoo-ri - The Soul-Mate, Itaewon Class TV series etc) tried to escape from Seoul to the village where Jung-hwan's mother aka Granny (Lee Jung-eun - Light Shop TV series, Hommage etc) lived. Unfortunately Soo-ah got infected and Jung-hwan tried to protect her from being killed by the government.

However, Jung-hwan's childhood friend Dong-bae (Yoon Kyung-ho - The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call TV series, Alienoid: Return to the Future etc) somehow found out about Soo-ah's condition. And it became even more complicated with the appearance of his old crush Yeon-hwa (Cho Yeo-jeong - Tarot, High Class TV series etc) who also returned to the village.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

When I first saw the trailer to this film, I thought that it will be a full zombie comedy especially after seeing the title. And although the first few minutes was more like a hint of what would come next, the early part did show some humorous moments. But as soon as Soo-ah started to become a zombie, the movie actually shifted to a more serious and dramatic kind, although there were still a bit of light humor here and there. And through out the whole film, the melodramatic element was very strongly felt in various moments, especially towards the end which made plenty of audience tearful (including my wife who had to cover her mouth to avoid giving loud sobbing sound).

I felt that the movie was very good in its story telling cause we were brought through the emotional ups and downs of someone who would do anything to protect his daughter despite all the difficulties. The emotional part was enhanced after a rather shocking revelation about Jung-hwan's past. It definitely make the story even more touching for audience. I read that the film was adapted from Korean comics (manhwa) that was serialized as webtoon of the same title by Lee Yun-chang. The movie itself was written and directed by Pil Gam-sung (Hostage: Missing Celebrity, A Bloody Lucky Day etc). It was very well received in South Korea as proven by its box office performance, already sitting at number 2 of the year 2025 after just 8 days of release. Whether it would go on to become the top grossing remains to be seen.

The cast did a wonderful job here. Jo Jung-suk was able to perform amazingly as the loving father, while Choi Yoo-ri was so convincing playing as zombie and their chemistry was so lovely to see. I also liked Lee Jung-eun's performance as the strict but warm granny while Yoon Kyung-ho provided some comical moments. There were other minor support cast but the most notable one was Jo Han-sun (A History of Jealousy, A Shop for Killers TV series etc) as an important character. I thought the background music was awesome too as they really added the weight of emotions especially during those touching scenes. The film had duration of 113 minutes with brief scenes during early part of the closing credits, but without any post end credit scene.

Overall this was an enjoyable movie. Although it was classified as comedy horror (no doubt because of the zombie factor), but I personally felt it to be more suitable classified as drama comedy. There was plenty of emotional and few heart breaking moments that would bring joy and perhaps a bit of sorrow at the same time. It's been a while since my wife's emotions were so affected when watching a movie in the cinema. So if you are in the mood for a nice drama comedy movie about a father protecting his zombie daughter, then you should be able to enjoy this one. And no need to worry cause it's not all just melodramatic, as it got some funny moments as well (particularly the scenes that include Granny and the cat).

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
