Brief Story Line
Set in the year 1920s, the minions (all voiced by Pierre Coffin) were still looking for the Big Boss to serve when they somehow ended up arriving in Hollywood and accidentally ruined the shooting of a movie directed by Max (Christoph Waltz - Alita: Battle Angel, Most Dangerous Game TV series etc). However the Bright Brothers (Jeff Bridges - Tron: Ares, Kingsman: The Golden Circle etc) who owned the film studio found them to be very amusing and wanted the minions to star in their movies.
One of the minions named James who loved art, planned to make a movie about monsters together with his best friends Henry and Ed. In order to do so, they had to find real monsters with the help from a small green creature called Goomi (Trey Parker - South Park TV series etc). Meanwhile other minions led by the annoying Dick also met with someone called Dort (Jesse Eisenberg - Now You See Me: Now You Don't, Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice etc) whom he believed to be the Big Boss worthy of their service. Both group of minions would find out that their separate missions would have major impact in their lives and to the world.
So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Well that was another hilarious movie in the Despicable Me franchise. It was amazing how it all started when these yellow funny small creatures who could not speak properly were introduced in the first film back in 2010, and now it had became a Multi-Billion Dollar franchise for Universal & Illumination Studios. This movie is the 7th installment of the whole series and it's looking like they got another hit in their hands cause audience seemed to be enjoying themselves when watching their movies and I think this one is no exception. With positive critics views, more likely than not, this film would be another major success.
Just like in previous Minions films, this one did not really have a deep story. But the Hollywood setting was a really nice touch that I enjoyed a lot. Somehow I could imagine myself being elated like James when seeing the Hollywood studio for the first time. There were few references to those era as well if you are familiar and noticed them. And of course the silliness and continuous unsuccessful attempts in finding the right boss to serve due to their own mistakes were just so funny and made the audience in the whole studio laughed out loud. My wife and I were part of those who were enjoying ourselves throughout the whole 90 minutes. Yes, this one did not have long duration which was fine cause it was enough to tell the whole story. Btw, during the closing credits, there were multiple brief amusing scenes involving the minions and other characters but there was no post end credit scene (except one very short comedic sound at the end).
Aside from the names above, the movie also had some support cast such as Allison Janney (Another Simple Favor, Lou etc) as the tour guide Olivia, Zoey Deutch (Juror #2, Before I Fall etc) as Debbie, Bobby Moynihan (Hoppers, The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins TV series etc) and Phil LaMarr (Samurai Jack TV series etc) as monsters Phillips & Howard respectively and even a cameo of famous director as himself. This film was directed by Pierre Coffin who also directed Despicable Me 1-3 and the first Minions based on screenplay by himself and Brian Lynch (Puss in Boots, The Secret Life of Pets 2 etc).
In the end this is another movie that was purely just for fun. You can have a good time for almost 90 minutes and have tons of laughs looking at those adorable and hilarious yellow creatures having a great adventure and left the cinema feeling happy. Oh before I forgot, these are different tribe of minions than the ones in the two previous Minions films. This would explain the non availability of the ones we knew and loved like Kevin & Stuart in here. Hence it's not exactly a sequel (or prequel even if it's set before the 2015 movie), but my wife and I think it's more suitable to categorize this as spinoff. So if you love the minions, then I am sure you would be entertained by this movie and can bring your kids during the school holiday to see this in the cinema. Happy watching!
