Brief Story Line
Story was set in the year 1999 in Haeseong city where Eun Chae-ni aka Trainwreck (Park Eun-bin - Road to Boston, Hyper Knife TV series etc) had been living all her life there with her very protective grandmother Mrs. Kim (Kim Hae-sook - Gyeongseong Creature TV series, Our Season etc). Chae-ni was best friends with Ro-bin aka Sap King (Im Seong-jae - The Ugly, Law and the City TV series etc) who worked at Mrs. Kim's restaurant and also Son Gyeong-hun aka Nightmare (Choi Dae-hoon - Uprising, Pro Bono TV series etc), an older guy who was married with a teenage daughter. Gyeong-hun loved to complain about anything to the government office where he ultimately met with Lee Eun-jeong (Cha Eun-woo - The First Ride, Wonderful World TV series etc), a civil servant who was given task to receive his complaints.
Later Chae-ni, Ro-bin and Gyeong-hun unexpectedly gain some kind of super power. However they were unable to control them and ended up creating trouble for themselves. Things gotten complicated when a group of people who also had super powers from experiments by Doctor Han Won-do (Son Hyun-joo - Big Deal, Your Honor TV series etc) gotten hold of Chae-ni's ability and tried to kill her. With the help from her friends and also Eun-jeong, Chae-ni had to fight for their lives while trying to save their city from Doctor Han's evil plan.
So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this series.
End of Brief Story Line
Well just as expected, this series was fun and enjoyable. Although the first half of the pilot episode was rather unconvincing as I was unsure where it was heading and the introduction of the main characters was rather long, but the second half was more interesting with more comedic moments. The second episode was getting better with more information revealed and subsequently it became more exciting. But the third episode was where it became really good. In fact I think this series really improved as it progressed with the ultimate two final episodes the most entertaining for me.
Earlier I thought it was having 10 episodes overall but when I reached the 6th episode, I realized it only had 8 like the standard Netflix series. Obviously it was a plus point for me as it did not take very long to complete the whole series, and it is also a limited series so it was pretty much concluded. However, in the finale, there was an interesting scene which was not surprising but could be considered as teaser in case they want to renew it in future. I understand this was not adapted from comics/webtoon, though I read that originally it was based on Stan Lee's work titled The B-Team but later revised to a completely different thing. The series itself was directed by Yoo In-sik (Vagabond, Dr. Romantic TV series) and written by Heo Dae-joong who previously wrote Extreme Job (no wonder it has a lot of comedic scenes).
The main cast did pretty great job in here with the quartet of Eun-bin, Seong-jae, Dae-hoon and Eun-woo provided a lot of ridiculous and sometimes idiotic behaviors that gave us plenty of laughs. There was one moment involving Ro-bin in the second episode which I laughed the hardest, and also seeing they learned how to control their power (with Gyeong-hun's seemingly useless) that made me laughed too. However I personally felt that Eun-bin and Eun-woo looked a little bit incompatible (but maybe that's just me). But Park Eun-bin was pretty much nailed it in the comedic part.
Aside from the ones I mentioned above, there were some important characters of Pal-ho (Bae Na-ra - TWould You Marry Me TV series Weak Hero Class season 2 etc), sisters Ju-ran (Jung Yi-seo - A Killer Paradox TV series etc) and Wo-ran (Choi Yoon-ji - Love Take Two TV series etc) who were part of the people experimented by Dr. Han and fully supported him. Their dark story provided balance to the humor on the protagnoists. There were also additional cast in support roles like Kang Ki-doong (Handsome Guys, First Responders TV series etc) as Eun-jeong's supervisor, Park Sung-geun (Our Golden Days TV series etc) as Church's Elder, Kim Jung-yeon (Goodbye Earth TV series etc) as Gyeong-hun's wife Mi-hui and several others in minor roles.
It seems that critics quite enjoyed the series as it got plenty of praises especially towards the performances and chemistry of its cast. I personally liked seeing how these town nobodys were able to work against all odds to save the world. It was light but also have few dramatic moments. There were some surprisingly good action sequence with high intensity during the final episodes combined with few nicely done fight scenes in the middle as well. And I was delighted it has a satisfying ending with one lovely scene towards the end which involved Eun-joong and that moment of Gyeong-hun with his daughter. So if you are in the mood for a series about normal people unexpectedly gaining super powers and had to save their lives and loved ones fighting against evil doctor and his team of amazing powers, then you will definitely like this one.
Happy watching!
