Little Brother - A Little Better than the Recent Raunchy Comedy Movies

When this movie was released on Friday by Netflix, I was busy finishing another series. Although it did not look to have good quality, I was still interested to give a try since it starred John Cena. So I straight away watch it once I finished that series yesterday. All right then, let's just get on with the film.

Brief Story Line

Successful house realtor Rudd Landy (John Cena - Heads of StateFerdinand etc) was very excited when he was invited to star in a big reality TV show produced by Olly (Caleb Hearon - The Devil Wears Prada 2 etc) and Leonore (Ego Nwodim - Mr. Throwback sitcom etc). Rudd's wife Deirdre (Michelle Monaghan - The Family Plan 2Patriots Day etc) and his assistant Mia (Sherry Cola - A Family Affair, Nobody Wants This TV series etc) were very supportive of him, despite his reluctance when he found out that his older brother Josh (Christopher Meloni - Law & Order: Special Victims Unit TV series, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle etc) was heavily mentioned in the show's promo.

Meanwhile Marcus Pinchel (Eric AndrĂ© - Balls UpIron Heart mini series etc) a resident of psychiatric hospital decided to break out and visit Rudd in New York city. Marcus and Rudd were part of Big Brother, Little Brother program when they were still children where Marcus felt a strong bond with Rudd, though Rudd did not feel the same. Obviously Rudd's life became totally disrupted with the sudden appearance of Marcus.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well that was a bit unexpected. As I said before, I was only watching this because of John Cena but I knew it was going to be a raunchy comedy which was fine for me in the past, though not so enjoyable nowadays. Turned out even though the comedy was not that funny, however the story despite its simplicity and predictable outcome, was not that bad. I also liked the way John Cena's character was written with his insecurities plus his chemistry with Michelle Monaghan was quite convincing as well. Eric André's character was rather annoying at first but it was less so as the story progressed.

One thing that I noticed in the film was it did not relied too heavily on the raunchy comedy. Yes there were some shown here usually involving Marcus, but there were occassional situational comedic moment which were still OK for me. I also like the ending even if I could already foresee from the beginning. There was one small detail about Marcus situation that I thought was illogical at first but it was clarified before the end which was kind of surprising in a good way. The movie itself was directed by Matt Spicer whose prior experience was directing the highly praised Ingrid Goes West and few episodes of TV series. It was written by Jarrad Paul (creator & writer of The Grinder TV series, co-writer of Yes Man etc) together with Andrew Mogel (creator & writer of Huge In France TV series, writer of Bad Bromance etc).

The film has duration of 100 minutes which was enough to cover the whole story. There were some mid end credit scenes plus gag reels shown during the closing credits just for laughs, but no post end credit scene. Aside from the above names, there were also few support characters like Rudd's two sons Cory (Bryce Gheisar - The Astronauts TV series etc) and Shane (Pilot Bunch - The Unbreakable Boy etc), another member of the Reality TV show Kieran Francis (Ben Ahler - The Gilded Age TV series etc) and few others in minor roles including celebrities cameo.

In the end this was not just another raunchy comedy as it got a better than expected story compared to other movies in the same genre. It even got a mixed reviews from critics which meant it was not so poorly received like similar type of films. Obviously you cannot compare this with high quality comedy movies that are worthy of praises or critically acclaimed. But at least it's not that bad. Not sure about audience opinion though, however it's not doing well in Indonesia and did not even make it to the Top 10 till now. So if you just want to see some comedy with a little drama then you could probably give it a try. However if you are not into raunchy comedy, then better just skip this.
