Brief Story Line
Jung-yeol (Kang Ha-neul - The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure, Curtain Call TV series etc) and Hong Nara (Jung So-min - Project Wolf Hunting, Because This is My First Life etc) had been married for years but their relationship was so bad that they decided to file for divorce. The judges who reviewed their request told them to reconsider within 30 days. Unexpectedly though, an accident somehow made them lost their memories.
Jung-yeol's mother (Kim Sun-young - Concrete Utopia, Crash Course in Romance TV series etc) and Nara's mother (Jo Min-soo - The Witch etc) wanted their children to recover their memories. However, they were adamant that they should still go ahead with the divorce and assigned Nara's sister Nami (Hwang Se-in - Duty After School TV series etc) to make sure this.
So what would happen to them and how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
If you have seen enough of romantic comedy movies, you could already guess how such film would conclude. But what set the ones that were successful and the underwhelming movies were the story, the journey and the chemistry of the characters. The plot of memory loss was actually not uncommon, but this time it was put to good use by the writer & director Nam Dae-jong (Homme Fatale, The Last Ride) as it gave plenty of awkward and funny situations. This was what made me and my wife enjoyed seeing it as we got to laugh on them. It was further enhanced by the behavior of their parents, in particular Jung-yeol and Nara's mothers and the little bit crazy Nami.
Another thing that I liked about this film was the chemistry between the lead cast Kang Ha-neul and Jung So-min. They looked genuinely hating each other during their marriage days as were shown throughout the whole movie. But we could also see their love for one another which was effectively shown via glimpses of flash backs. It was easy to like them as they tried to regain their memories that made audience obviously rooting for them, especially with the days running out. (The movie's Korean title was 30 Days).
As I mentioned above, the mothers and Nami were the ones who provided additional funny moments in the movie. However, like in any standard rom-com movies, there were also the characters of best friends, but the one that really stood out for me was the bar owner Ki-bae (Yoon Gyung-ho - Start Up, The Worst of Evil TV series etc). What surprised me though was he was said to be Jung-yeol's older brother in various websites, but I did not remember it mentioned in the movie. Maybe we just missed it or most likely the websites made an error? Anyway he also gave us some additional humorous moments.
The ending was pretty great to me as it did not have a very straight forward conlusion but still satisfying for fans of romantic stories. Although I did feel it lacked a bit of conclusion for one side of the family. There were some funny scenes during the closing credits while they were showing the names of the cast. Oh, there was also a brief post end credit scene here so you might want to stick around till the very end if you are interested.
Overall to me this was an enjoyable romantic comedy film with plenty of comedic scenes and interesting story of growing in and out of love. It also did very well commercially, already making into the top 10 in box office performance. Only thing that I was unhappy was the movie seemed very dark which I think was due to the cinema's projector/screen. Luckily it was mostly set in the afternoon so it did not make it so hard to see it. So if you are looking for a fun romantic comedy with a pretty balanced portion of the romance, comedy and drama, then you should be entertained by this.
