(2021) The Watcher - Sadly an Unsuccessful Attempt in Creating a Good Quality Comedy Thriller Movie

I saw this Indonesian movie's trailer on Disney+ the other day and felt it looked a bit like Hollywood movie that I quite enjoyed years ago. So I was quite intrigued and thought I should give it a try. OK let's get more to it.

Brief Story Line

Krishna (Angga Yunanda - Dua Garis Biru, Mariposa etc) was a regular high school student who was living with his mother (Izabel Jahya - Dignitate etc). He had a huge crush on the girl next door Tiara (Caitlin Halderman - Surat Cinta untuk Starla, Dreadout etc). Krishna's best friends Soni (Teuku Ryzki - Generasi Micin etc) and Tunggul (Yudha Keling - Bucin etc) were always supportive and encourage him to express his feeling towards Tiara.

When he had an accident that confined him to his room, Krishna was given a telescope which he used to observe on his neighbors including Tiara and her father Robert (Marcellino Lefrandt - Bidadari TV series, Terlalu Tampan etc). But his activity soon became dangerous when he noticed a suspicious looking neighbor later on revealed to be Markus (Jeremy Thomas - Tersanjung TV series, Denting Kematian etc).

So what would happen to Krishna? Find them all in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well this movie was not exactly up to the quality that I had hoped for, especially looking at the credentials of the director/writer Anggy Umbara whose directing credits included movies like Sabar ini UjianMendadak KayaWarkop DKI Reborn: Jangkrik Boss Part 2 and many more. When I watched those movies, I was quite entertained and enjoyed them as well. However, this time around I personally see this as not one of his best works.

As we were introduced with the characters in the beginning, I thought that part was quite OK. And when Krishna was given the telescope & start watching his neighbors (which has a strong resemblance with the plot from Disturbia starring Shia LaBeouf) it was pretty interesting as well. But sadly after a while, I felt there were too many plot holes, involving people who seemed out of characters & a lot of illogical parts. It was pretty frustrating seeing that it was kind of "adapting" an interesting plot and I was psyched at the prospect of seeing good quality comedy thriller.

The cast themselves, especially Angga Yunanda & Caitlin Halderman at least tried their best to show their professionalism and managed to convince me of their roles. Teuku Rizky and Yudha Keling who played as the best friends were OK in giving some comical relief, although their postures were totally not suitable as high school students. The senior actors Marcellino Lefrandt and Jeremy Thomas provided a very standard performance. While the rest of the cast did not leave too much impression, including Ceu Edoh aka Nining Yuningsih whose role as the maid Rakonah seemed out of place.

One thing that I felt lacking was good background music. There was no nice soundtrack that could made me enjoy the film more. Luckily it has a duration of only around 90 minutes (which did not have any mid or post end credit scene) so it did not take too much of my time. Overall this movie would have been a good one had the story been written in a better way. Perhaps the writing team was given too little time to come up with a more logical story and ended up rushing things. Although I still appreciate the effort they had done in making this movie, especially during the pandemic time. So if you are intrigued by the plot (like me), you might want to rethink about watching this one. But if you are fans of the lead cast and just want to see them, then most likely you would be able to enjoy the film since they looked adorable enough.

Mike's movie moments rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
