Afterlife of the Party - A Nice Enough Movie with Familiar but Still Interesting Concept

Yesterday this new movie and several others were released on Netflix. I was intrigued to watch since it seemed to have interesting premise and looked comedic in nature from the trailer shown. OK let us dive into it now.

Brief Story Line

Cassie (Victoria Justice - Victorious TV series etc) was a very dynamic social personality who love to party with friends with similar interest. During her birthday week, Cassie asked her best friend and roommate Lisa (Midori Francis - Good Boys etc) to join in her party. Unexpectedly though, Cassie had a freak accident which resulted to her demise.

Before she could pass on to the "Above", Cassie was given the chance to right her wrongs on earth which involved her father Howard (Adam Garcia - Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen etc), her estranged mother Sofia (Gloria Garcia) and Lisa. In doing so, she was aided by a guardian angel named Val (Robyn Scott).

So how would the story conclude? Find them all in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

As I said above, I was interested with this movie because of its premise. It might not be too original as there have been many movies/series where the lead cast was given the chance to right their wrongs after their demise. But this one offered similar story from the perspective of a social butterfly (a term used to describe a person who is socially dynamic, successful at networking, charismatic, and personally gregarious - as per Wikipedia). This kind of person would relate heavily with the younger generation.

When watching this film, I thought the friendship between Cassie and Lisa was very close and really convincing. They seemed to have good chemistry as well. So it was interesting to see the way Cassie had to finish her "assignments" that involved Lisa and also Cassie's parents. Sometimes there were a bit of comedic situation too, although it was not the kind where you could laugh out loud. What surprised me though was the few emotional moments shown in the movie. I thought to myself that this would be something my wife liked.

During the movie, there were few nice songs sung by a pop singer named Koop (played by Spencer Sullivan who is an actual singer). In addition to him, there was also the appearance of Timothy Renouf as Lisa and Cassie's new neighbor, Max and Myfanwy Waring as baker owner Emme. Now if you are not familiar with the names of the people in here, you're not alone. Apart from Midori Francis, I never saw any of the cast either. I could probably have seen Adam Garcia before, but I could not remember him at all.

As a drama comedy movie with familiar but still interesting plot, this one was OK and quite enjoyable. I thought that Victoria Justice was perfect for this kind of role and with nice chemistry with Midori Francis, plus her personality, made this film pretty entertaining. Those few emotional scenes would also make fans of such attributes satisfied. In addition, there were some music that should be fine for young audience. And even though at times there were some cheesy moments, but I think they were still quite reasonable and did not make them obnoxious. So if you like this genre, you could give this movie a try. It's available on Netflix.
