Brief Story Line
In the town of Blissfield, there was an urban legend of serial killer who murdered their victims during homecoming. The killer who turned out to be real and was called Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn - Hacksaw Ridge, Wedding Crashers etc) started to appear and killing people again.
Meanwhile, in Blissfield high, Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton - Detective Pikachu, The Society TV series etc) was a timid girl who was constantly bullied by people at her school. Her best friends Nyla (Celeste O'Connor) and Joshua (Misha Osherovich) constantly remind her to stand up for herself, including to have the courage admitting her feeling to Booker (Uriah Shelton - The Warriors Gate etc). Millie was always trying to cheer her mother (Katie Finneran - Bloodline TV series etc) ever since her father passed away, which upset her older sister Charlene (Dana Drori) who thought Millie should live her own life.
When due to some reason, the Butcher somehow switched bodies with Millie, all hell break loose. Now Millie had to do everything to switch back to her body before she permanently be in the Butcher's body. So how would the story conclude? Find them all in this horror comedy movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Well that was truly entertaining. I had a wonderful time watching this movie as it was really what I had hoped for with such an interesting premise. And I was glad that I finally got the chance to watch it. Now if you remember popular movie titled Freaky Friday (I have only watched the 2003 version starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis) which had been made in several versions adapted from 1972 children book of the same title written by Mary Rodgers, then you would be able to relate to this film. After all, it was said to be adapted from that same book, but with a twist.
Switching bodies between mother and daughter was already quite interesting. However switching bodies between a high school girl and a middle aged serial killer was definitely funny in so many ways. And I was laughing a lot during this movie, especially when Millie was inhabiting the butcher's body. Vince Vaughn was truly excellent here as he managed to convince me that he was being Millie, with the facial expressions and body language & movement. I am very sure that people would just laugh because he was so natural. Now on the other hand, Kathryn Newton might be convincing as serial killer, but apart from one or two scenes, I could not really picture her as the Butcher.
As a horror slasher movie, this one did not forget with its roots where the killings were done brutally to the extreme with gore and blood all over the place, just like what you would see in similar other movies. But the idea of combining it with the plot from Freaky Friday was kind of brilliant. It was a really perfect combination that was enjoyable to see. Of course Vince Vaughn spot on performance truly help make this film amusing. There were also the occasional jump scare scenes which I think if this was seen in theater would be even more pleasurable. And it should not come as a surprise since the director Christopher Landon was already experienced in making such movies like Happy Death Day and its sequel.
There was nothing else to say about this movie except that it was a real treat. If you are looking for slasher movie that has got all those attributes combined with natural comedy, then this would really satisfy you. Its duration of 101 minutes was just perfect. Btw it did not have any mid or post end credit scene or anything that would hint a sequel. And I did not read anything that said about possible sequel either. So have fun watching this. It's available on HBO Go or you can watch it on HBO cable TV.
Happy watching!
