Brief Story Line
Dan Forester (Chris Pratt - Onward, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, etc) was a biology teacher and living at a nice home together with his wife Emmy (Betty Gilpin - Stuber, Coffee & Karim etc) and their young daughter Muri (Ryan Kiera Armstrong). He was having a strained relationship with his father James (J. K. Simmons - 21 Bridges, Patriots Day etc). Their normal lives changed when suddenly some soldiers from the future appeared in the present and requested the help to fight aliens that were destroying the earth in 2051.
A lot of people were drafted to be transported to the future to fight these aliens called Whitespikes but a lot of them did not return. Dan was somehow drafted together with other trainees such as Charlie (Sam Richardson - Superintelligence, Veep TV series etc) and veteran Dorian (Edwin Hodge - The Purge films etc). When they arrived in the future, Dan who was former soldier had to lead the inexperienced draftees fight against the dangerous aliens and support the humans led by their commander (Yvonne Strahovski - He's Out There, The Handmaid's Tale TV series etc).
And so how would the film conclude? Find them all in this exciting fun alien vs humans movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Wow it has been quite some time I watched a major blockbuster movie such as this one where I was fully entertained. This is the type of movie that I really liked because it has the element of fighting against aliens and combined with another subject of time travel that I also loved. And what made me truly enjoyed it was the action sequence which was absolutely awesome. This type of action movie was amazing with the help from brilliant work by the visual effects team. The aliens effects were realistic and their design were great, totally convincing as deadly type of aliens. And despite heavy on CGI, I think the really hefty budget (said to be around USD 200 million) was utilized at the maximum, giving all the desired effects.
Now even though there was a time travel element here, it was not really the main focus. It was only explained quite briefly during the trainees introduction. Btw, these trainees were also the ones who actually gave the story a bit lighter feel, especially with the appearance of Sam Richardson. There were also other trainees like Norah (Mary Lynn Rajskub - 24 TV series etc) and Cowan (comedian Mike Mitchell) who had one brief hilarious moment. Now the main cast themselves, specifically Chris Pratt once again showed that he is a star whose charm was put to good effect. I thought he suit his role nperfectly. Yvonne Strahovski also proved that she is good in action genre (like when she did in Chuck TV series).
The duration of the movie (138 minutes) was something that might be a bit too long for some, especially during the early part before being transported to the future. However, once the story focused on the future war, it was absolute thrill and suspense. The scenes towards the end though, could be seen like a bit of downturn, but I still loved it. And it set up really nicely towards the conclusion. Before I forgot, there was no mid or post end credit scenes in here, except for the long list of crews who have worked hard in this movie that was directed by Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie).
Overall I love this action packed movie. It felt like part Independence Day and part Alien. Yes it might not have been truly original and there might be familiar recipes used in other similar movies, but I really enjoyed it as a real pop corn movie. So if you do not care about what critics say (who did not like this) and just be ready for huge entertainment, then definitely watch this. If you are like me who love this sort of action movie filled with action, suspense and wonderful special effects, I believe you would be enjoying it as well.
