Chaos Walking - Unique Premise but not Enough Sparks to make for a Wonderful Sci-Fi Movie

Yesterday, I noticed a new movie released on Catchplay+ platform which seemed unfamiliar to me. But when I looked into more detail, apparently it did play in Indonesian theaters for a while 2-3 months back. Perhaps it was playing too briefly that it did not get attention. Anyway, as a relatively new film that I could watch for free, obviously I gave this a try, especially with well known names in it.

Brief Story Line

Set in the year 2257, in a distant planet called New World, lived a colony of people who moved from earth but had strange condition called "Noise" where their inner thoughts could be seen and heard by others. Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland - Spider-man in MCU, The Current War etc) was the youngest in the all male colony led by its Mayor David Prentiss (Mads Mikkelsen - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story etc). Todd wanted to be acknowledged by the mayor despite the dislike from his son Davy (Nick Jonas - Midway etc). However Todd's adoptive parents Ben (Demián Bichir - Godzilla vs. Kong etc) and Cillian (Kurt Sutter - Sons of Anarchy TV series etc) did not approve his intention.

When a scout ship from a second colony arrived at the New World, its passenger, later on revealed to be Viola (Daisy Ridley - Peter Rabbit, The Star Wars third trilogy etc) was found by Todd. Mayor Prentiss who heard that it was a female, immediately asked the people to capture her. Meanwhile Todd who never saw a girl before, was captivated by her and decided to save her from the pursue by people of Prentisstown including the preacher Aaron (David Oyelowo - The Midnight Sky etc).

So what would happen to Todd and Viola? And why was she being hunted? Find them all in this sci-fi movie with unique story.

End of Brief Story Line

I did not watch the trailer to this movie at all before giving it a try and only read the brief synopsis that sounded interesting. So I did not really have an idea of how the movie would be. As I started watching it and immediately given a taste of how the "Noise" works, I was quite intrigued and thought it was fun. The story became more interesting with the appearance of Viola, especially when Todd really saw her as the first female he had ever seen.

What I liked about this movie was the unique and sometimes hilarious situation occurring with Todd's inner thoughts (and sometimes imaginations). They would make me laugh or at least grinned. It certainly did not help with Viola's suspicions on Todd and the way she could see and read his mind because of the Noise.

However, apart from those, the story itself did not seem to have too much development. There was a bit of mystery surrounding the all males colony which could have been easily guessed. And the pursue by Prentisstown people on Todd and Viola did not feel suspenseful. There was little action, but it did have a decent ending that I liked. While watching the end credit, I saw that it was based on the book "The Knife of Never Letting Go" by Patrick Ness which was highly regarded. Btw there was no mid or post end credit scene here.

This movie was directed by Doug Liman (director of successful films such as The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow and few others), unfortunately though, it was not well received by critics and having poor commercial results as well. I personally was not too surprised after watching the film as it did not leave me with too good impression as I would have hoped for, especially with Liman's prior success, plus the big names of Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley (who looked weird in blonde).

Overall, this was a movie that sadly fail to impress me. If anyone asked about the film sometime in the future, I would have probably forgotten about it. It's not that this is a really bad movie as it did have its moments. However, without anything extraordinary, it became just one of those films that I categorized as non memorable enough. So if you are fans of Tom Holland and/or Daisy Ridley, you could give this a try and watch them together in here. But if you expect something extra good, you might not find it here. The choice is yours.
