Balls Up - A Terrible Totally Not Funny Raunchy Comedy Movie

I did not realize there was new movie released by Prime Video two days ago and only noticed it yesterday. It looked like a fun comedy movie and since I was in the middle of a rather depressing series, I thought it would be a nice distraction for a while and watched it last night. All right then, let's get right to it.

Brief Story Line

Elijah DeBell (Paul Walter Hauser - PlaydateInside Out 2 etc) and Brad Lewison (Mark Wahlberg - Play DirtyDaddy's Home 2 etc) worked for a condom company who were trying to be the sponsor for 2025 Football World Cup Championship in Brazil. Elijah and Brad managed to convince Senior Santos (Benjamin Bratt - Coco, Law and Order TV series etc), the person in charge of sponsorship to appoint their company. However everything did not go as planned as they somehow managed to screw things up.

When Elijah and Brad were given tickets to the World Cup final, unexpectedly they caused an incident that made both of them become public enemies and had to leave Brazil. While trying to outrun the mob, they encountered a dangerous gangster leader named Pavio Curto Bundchen (Sacha Baron Cohen - Ironheart mini series, The Dictator etc) and also other parties.

So what would happen to Elijah and Brad? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I usually had quite fun watching raunchy comedy which never required any thinking and provided some laughs. However recent movies of such genre were not able to satisfy me at all. And this latest one was definitely one of those. When I began watching and saw Mark Wahlberg making fun of Paul Walter Hauser, I could immediately feel this was not going to be one of the films I would enjoy. But I kept an open mind and just continue with a slim hope that it might get better. Unfortunately though, it did not. From start to finish, the movie was not able to make me laugh out loud except for one or two brief chuckles related to the HR guy in the company.

I never put any thoughts on the plot for such movie, but this time I really felt it was terrible. The jokes were not funny and the cast were not able to show their capabilities. Not even the appearance of Sacha Baron Cohen was able to salvage this as his character was horribly written with too long intro when he met Elijah and Brad for the first time. It was also sad to see Benjamin Bratt playing his character even if it was just for fun. Other cast including Daniela Melchior (Anaconda 2025 reboot, Fast X etc) as public defender Antonia, Luciano Szafir (Brave, O Clone etc) as Brazil minister of defense Cristos, Eric Andre (Sing 2, Trolls Band Together etc) and Chelsey Crisp (Fresh of the Boat TV series etc) as Eco warriors Aaron and Julie respectively plus several others. At least there was Molly Shannon (Hotel Transylvania: Transformation, Evan Almighty etc) who still provided her usual comedic moment.

I thought the quality of the movie was very poor which was surprising considering it was directed by Peter Farrely whose previous works included the highly regarded Green Book, comedy Ricky Stanicky and other successful comedy films he did together with his brother Bobby (Shallow Hal, Me, Myself and Irene etc). Again it was also shocking if it was due to poor writing since the writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick did wonderful job writing for Deadpool and Zombieland movies. Whatever the reason, none of the high quality director, writers and proven track record of the cast were able to make this movie better.

Another thing that I thought was very bad was the jokes about the football. I know that it was not a popular sport in the US compared to American football. but a lot of countries in the world are fans (including myself). Although this is just a comedy movie, but the match shown in the film was very clearly done in studio with poor special effects, though at least the British commentator's voice was pretty amazing (Simon Hill is Australian based English soccer commentator). Overall this is definitely something that is below even my lowest expectation in a comedy movie. I am actually surprised critics did not give a lower rating than it has at the time of writing (42%). So if you are hoping for a funny or enjoyable raunchy comedy, this would certainly not satisfy you. Just avoid watching this one if you do not want to regret like I did.
