Daddy's Home 2 - The Sequel with More Daddies to Enjoy

Yesterday my wife and I were thinking of just taking a rest but then she thought of seeing a fun movie. So it was decided that we would watch this movie which we know for sure would be a light one as it was a comedy movie. We have seen the original movie either from cable TV or online streaming and we already know what we would be getting if we saw this one. The movie did not play in the nearest theater near our home so we went to Kuningan City instead. Now we shall go more into the movie.

Brief Story Line

As you would have known from the original movie, Brad (Will Ferrell - Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Blades of Glory etc) who was married to Sara (Linda Cardellini - The Lazarus Project, The Founder etc) and was the step father of Sara's children Megan (Scarlett Estevez) and Dylan (Owen Vaccaro) had become quite close to Dusty (Mark Wahlberg - Patriots Day, Transformers: The Last Knight etc), Sara's ex husband and the real father of Megan and Dylan. Brad and Sara also had a child of their own named Griffy. Meanwhile Dusty already married to Karen (Alessandra Ambrosio) who also had a daughter Adrianna (Didi Costine) from her previous marriage with Roger (WWE wrestler John Cena - The Wall etc).

When Brad and Dusty wanted to celebrate Christmas together to avoid confusing their children of having to go back and forth to both houses, their plans would have to be changed a bit to accommodate the arrival of Brad's father Don (John Lithgow - The Accountant, Terms of Endearment etc) who was such a cheerful person, loved to make jokes & had an unusually close relationship with Brad, and Dusty's father Kurt (Mel Gibson - Lethal Weapon movies, Blood Father etc) who was the total opposite of Don, a womanizer macho man and did not have the best relationship with Dusty.

With so many people coming to the same place to spend the holiday few days before Christmas, plus the totally different characters of Brad and Dusty's fathers, so many things would go wrong for them. So could this large family be able to celebrate their first Christmas together? Find them all in this fun comedy movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I was actually a bit skeptical seeing this movie whether it would still be as enjoyable as the original movie. In the first movie, I was pretty entertained by the difficulties Brad had to endure to gain Megan and Dylan's approval especially when compared to Dusty who was their real father and saw Brad as a competition in getting his children's love. The crazy competition was the main attraction then. Now in this sequel, the competition was no longer there between the two, since they have made peace and Dusty also had his own family. The plot was made more complex with the additional characters of Don and Kurt who have similar differences between Brad and Dusty. Of course as the story progressed, Brad and Dusty's problem seemed to appear again. So I was pretty satisfied with the additional characters and the general story line.

As a comedy movie, it has more than few scenes that would give us laughters, usually through the silliness and naivety of Brad, or the crazy parenting advice given by Kurt, or the funny moments involving Dylan's behavior. There was one moment that my wife and I were totally amused involving a suitcase which I laughed quite hard. Being a movie aimed for Christmas holidays, the movie did not forget to put some kind of Christmas joy and happiness especially towards the end. There were many Christmas songs with my favorite "Do They Know It's Christmas" originally sung by Band Aid back in 1984 that was also sung by the cast. By the way the movie surprisingly had a post end credit scene which was just for fun.

Apart from the rather slapstick humor and other jokes, the movie also tried to make some dramatic moment, even though it was not very touching for me personally. Despite my wife and I pretty much enjoyed the comedic situation and some of the funny stuffs, I also realize that this movie might not appeal to all audience. If you want to be able to enjoy this film, I would strongly recommend to see the prequel 2015 Daddy's Home so you could understand and more appreciative of the story & characters. If you could enjoy that first movie, then only you better go and see this one in the cinema, but if you find that one to be too absurd and you do not like the characters, then you would definitely not able to enjoy this movie. The choice is yours.

Happy watching!
