Sing 2 - A Bigger, Better and Grander Sequel

After playing in theaters for few days and missing out on its early screening day last week, my wife and I finally got the chance to see this movie yesterday. We would have probably seen it earlier had it played in the theater near our home on its premier day. Anyway, I should get to it now.

Brief Story Line

Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey - The Gentlemen, Dallas Buyers Club etc) who was now having modest success with his theater at local level wanted to make it in the big league at Redshore city. Together with the talents he recruited in the first movie, i.e. Rosita (Reese Witherspoon - Walk the Line, Big Little Lies TV series etc), Johnny (Taron Egerton - Kingsman: The Golden CircleBillionaire Boys Club etc), Meena (singer Tori Kelly), Gunter (Nick Kroll - The Addams Family etc) and Ash (Scarlett Johansson - Ghost in the ShellThe Jungle Book) they went to the city to do an audition.

Buster somehow managed to convince big producer Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale - SuperintelligenceThunder Force etc) to produce his show. However, he needed to bring in a major rock star named Clay Calloway (Singer Bono of U2) who led secluded life in the past 15 years and nobody knew his whereabouts, including Buster.

So how would the story conclude? Find them all in this fun drama comedy music movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I was at first having a bit of doubt whether this movie would be as enjoyable as its predecessor. But after my wife found out that people seemed to like this one better than the original, it made me a bit more excited to see it. And frankly after seeing the movie, both of us really loved it and had great time. It was filled with plenty of scenes that made us warm at heart and also some uplifting moments and at certain times it was so exciting that my wife could not help but clap her hands a bit.

Unlike the first movie where the story focused on the personal struggle of each character to make it into Buster's production show, this time there was not a lot of those as the focus shifted to how they could make it big. The way Buster tried whatever he could to even get an audience with Jimmy Crystal was very interesting and obviously we rooted for them. There was quite a lot of funny moments which usually involved Buster's assistant Miss Crawly (Garth Jennings) who was my wife's favorite character in here. Btw, Garth Jennings was the director and writer of this film and the original.

The part that I liked in this movie was how the character had to be better in this new show. In particular for me was what Johnny had to face which felt really inspiring (especially during his part in the show which was really fantastic). In addition to the characters I mentioned above, there were new cast who provided more color, such as the talent scout Suki (Chelsea Peretti - Brooklyn Nine Nine TV series etc), Jimmy's daughter Porscha (singer Halsey), the street performer Nooshy (Letitia Wright - Black Panther etc), Meena's partner Darius (Eric Andre - The Mitchells vs. the Machines etc), singer Pharrell Williams and many more.

Throughout the whole movie, we will be entertained by many nice songs which was combination of new and a bit of old. With Bono involved, certainly there would be few U2 songs which were hugely popular. Despite having tons of songs in here, I considered this movie not a musical where singing were frequently used to communicate between characters. The singing here were only done during the show, and some songs were only used as background music during certain time. And the show itself was really wonderful, with many amazing performances by the cast.

Aside from the fun and excitement that we felt before the show, plus the engaging characters story, my wife and I were really entertained by the whole movie. The sound effects in the studio where we saw this was awesome even with the standard Dolby 7.1 surround system. And my wife also felt that seeing it in the cinema was more satisfying as it felt really grand, like we were in the show ourselves. It would have been a completely different experience had we seen it in the small screen of our TV via streaming.

Overall, this was an interesting an entertaining movie. I definitely felt this sequel to be grander than the original due to larger cast and even more real life well known singers including the legendary Bono. I thought Garth Jennings was brilliant for thinking how to make this bigger. Btw, the duration of 110 minutes was really perfect as it did not feel draggy and was really fun. There was no mid or post end credit scene, although the early part of the closing credit showed few funny scenes that you could enjoy. So if you like the first movie, then you will definitely enjoy this sequel like my wife and I did.

Happy watching!
