Thrash - An Enjoyable Enough Survival Thriller Movie

Two days ago, this film was made available on Netflix as part of their usual Friday new movie release. I thought the premise looked interesting so I did not hesitate to give it a try. So how was the movie then? Let us find out more, shall we?

Brief Story Line

When a category 5 hurricane called Henry was going to pass through the East Coast, the government of Annieville town which was right in the middle advised their people to evacuate. Unfortunately there were some who were still in town like Lisa (Phoebe Dynevor - Inheritance, Bridgerton TV series etc), a pregnant woman who was driving to get out of town, Dakota (Whitney Peak - Hocus Pocus 2, Gossip Girl 2021 series etc) a young woman who was alone in her house and trio of siblings Ron (Stacy Clausen - True Spirit docudrama etc) and his younger sister Dee (Alyla Browne - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 etc) & brother Will (Dante Ubaldi) who were told to stay inside the house with their foster parents.

Meanwhile Dakota's uncle Dale (Djimon Hounsou - Rebel MoonThe King's Man etc) who was also a shark researcher and working out of town was unable to accompany her as the access road was blocked. Things became totally dangerous when the hurricane finally reached Annieville destroying the buildings with heavy flood. To make matters worse, there were sharks that somehow reached the location.

So what would happen to the people who were still in town? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

As expected, this movie was full of intensity from the catastrophic event of heavy flood, to the drama of people involved and obviously the dangerous sharks. Hence the film's category of survival thriller. Such movie would always rely on the special effects which to my personal opinion was quite decent. The flood seemed pretty realistic and the blood flow from shark attacks looked scary enough. At first the sharks did not seem to be clearly shown which I thought was purposely done as they were unable to make them convincing. But at later stage, they finally gave audience sight of what we were waiting for and I thought they did not disappoint.

In term of story and characters, though it was unoriginal, I felt in general they were OK. I like the siblings and was fine with Dakota as well. However, I did not really like the way Lisa was written as she seemed to be using her pregnancy to "guilt trip" other people to help her (not saying being pregnant is a poor excuse, just wished the writer could set different path). Uncle Dale was so so while the foster parents Billy (Matt Nable - Mr. Inbetween TV series etc) & Rachel (Amy Matthews - Home and Away soap opera etc) were annoying enough to give more color to the story. There was one scene involving Billy which was funny cause it came at an unexpected moment. Aside from the names I already mentioned, there were also appearances of support cast like Andrew Lees (Unfriended: Dark Web etc) as TV reporter Joe, Chai Hansen (Play Dirty etc) as Dale's colleague Brian, Elijah Ungvary as Scott and several others.

Another thing that I liked in here was the way it did not take long to get to the suspenseful part. It also only has 86 minutes duration which was sufficient to cover the whole thing. There was no mid or post end credit scene, but the ending was kind of unique. The climax though was not too great for me as it was a bit illogical on the part involving Lisa (not that other parts did not raise any eyebrows but this one was too hard to ignore for me). The film did not get a lot of love from critics and audience did not seem to appreciate it either. However, it seemed to be interesting enough to make it to the global chart (including number one in Indonesia after only 2 days).

The movie was written and directed by Tommy Wirkola (Violent Night, Dead Snow etc). It entered production in 2024 with a different title but was renamed 2 times till the final one Thrash (which I am unable to find the relevance). From what I read, it was supposed to be released by Sony pictures in 2025, but the rights to distribute was transferred to Netflix early this year, which I think was a good move for Sony as it probably would be challenging to perform well in term of Box Office. Overall this was an enjoyable enough survival thriller movie. It might not be the best out there with some shortcomings but it was a no brainer and entertaining enough as long as you do not expect something extraordinary. So if you are interested in something like this, you can definitely give it a try. But if you want a more drama centric of survival, then this movie is certainly not for you. The choice is yours.
