Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - Still as Entertaining as its Predecessors and Should be Pleasing for Fans of the Games

This movie had its early screening in Indonesia last weekend but my wife and I did not have the time to see it then. And so we decided to do it yesterday afternoon where apparently many families also went to the cinema we saw it. OK, I'll just get right to it then.

Brief Story Line

After the events of second movie, Sonic (Ben Schwartz - The Afterparty TV series, Space Force TV series etc), Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey - Naruto anime series etc) and Knuckles (Idris Elba - Extraction 2H/Jack TV series etc) were now living happily together with their adoptive parents Tom (James Marsden - X-men movies, Hairspray etc) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter - A Madea Christmas etc). One day as they were spending a good time, team Sonic were approached by G.U.N agents led by Director Rockwell (Krysten Ritter - Nightbooks, Love and Death mini series etc) to help diffuse a major situation in Japan caused by another super hedgehog called Shadow (Keanu Reeves - Toy Story 4John Wick movies etc).

Things gotten more complicated with the appearance of Sonic's old nemesis Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Man on the Moon etc) and another person who was behind Shadow and looked a lot like Ivo. As the threat became more imminent, Sonic had to find ways to save the world and the people he love.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I saw this film's trailer a week before but during that one and only time, I already knew the main plot and a little bit on the comedic moment. Luckily I did not finish watching the trailer cause otherwise I would have seen all the good parts. Well in any case, since it basically revealed there would be two Dr. Robotniks, it's no longer a surprise for audience, especially for those who played the game cause they would have known who he was.

Anyway, this movie was still as fun and enjoyable as its predecessors. My wife and I had great time seeing it as it was filled with entertaining adventure scenes, although if I have to be critical, I felt it was less of a video game adaptation but more like a superhero movie complete with its super powered villain. Even the action felt a lot like watching The Flash series/movies where the speed of Sonic was shown during the chasing all across the town (Not that I am complaning cause I also like those a lot).

What made me and my wife like this film was also the humor and performance of Jim Carrey who once again provided his flashes of brilliance by portraying not one but two Robotniks with different characterization. And obviously the special effects were amazing as they looked realistic as if there were really two of them (Carrey even used a bit of breaking the fourth wall briefly). There were some characters from previous movies reappearing here such as Ivo's assistant Agent Stone (Lee Madjoub), Commander Walter (Tom Butler), Maddie's sister Rachel (Natasha Rothwell - How to Die Alone TV series etc) and her husband Randall (Shemar Moore - Criminal Minds TV series etc). New characters that stood out were Maria (Alyla Browne - young Furiosa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga etc) and obviously Shadow. His background story was nicely done and Keanu Reeves voice characterization was perfect, making him beliavable as the vengeful, brooding and dark hedgehog which made audience (including me and my wife) symphatize him.

When the film started, my wife and I actually did not exactly remember the story of the second movie. But it did not really matter cause we know that Tails and Knuckles became part of the family, and in any case this one focused on a new enemy. Since both of us never played the game anymore, we were not aware there were so many characters from this title. This movie did open our eyes of this fact. Btw, the movie was still directed by Jeff Fowler with screenplay from Pat Casey, Josh Miller & John Whittington who were writers of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It also garnered praise from critics like the previous movies and the box office performance was not disappointing either.

The film has duration of 110 minutes which I thought was just nice. There was one important mid end credit scene and a brief post end credit scene where both should please fans of the games and movies. I read that there is going to be a fourth film scheduled in 2027 (still a long time but it's pretty exciting news). Overall this is a movie that is entertaining for the whole family as it got well executed action adventure scenes (good for the young children), nice humor, engaging story and of course a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog characters from the game appearing here (great fan-service). My wife and I were delighted to see the film (she even got emotional on more than one occassion) and we also were satisfied with the ending. So if you like the first and second movie, I am sure you are going to like this third one like both of us did.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
