Carry-On - An Entertaining Action Thriller that Should Excite Fans of Such Genre

After few weeks of no exciting new movie released in Netflix on Friday, yesterday there was this film with interesting premise. Obviously I decided to watch it once I was ready after finishing work. All right, let's just get on with the movie then.

Brief Story Line

Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton - Sing 2Robin Hood etc) was a Transportation Security Administration-TSA officer working in the Los Angeles airport together with his girlfriend Nora (Sofia Carson - Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists TV series, Purple Hearts etc). On the day before Christmas during the very busy period, Ethan was stationed at the luggage scanning post. However, he soon got a message from mysterious person referred to as Traveler (Jason Bateman - Thunder ForceThe Outsider mini series etc) who threatened him to let a luggage past during inspection. As he tried hard to reject the threat, Ethan could not avoid as Traveler was assisted by Watcher (Theo Rossi - The Penguin mini series, Emily and the Criminal etc) who had vast knowledge about him.

Meanwhile Detective Elena Cole (Danielle Deadwyler - The Harder They Fall, Paradise Lost TV series etc) was investigating a murder case which she managed to deduce a possible major threat in the airport and might be linked to Ethan. With time running out, Ethan had to use all his wit and intelligence to avert the threat from the Traveler and save the people.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

It's been a while since I got the excitement of watching a suspenseful thriller like this movie. It gave me strong Die Hard vibe especially since it was set during Christmas with the lead character having to fight against intelligent terrorist. Amazingly this movie felt intense despite the action was not that much. And when there were action sequence it actually made me in awe, particularly the car chase. Despite using computer (AI?) to make them, still did not take away the fun aspect.

However, I was a bit disappointed as the intelligence shown during the first 1.5 hour was rather diminished in the last half hour due to a bit of illogical story development. Fortunately the finale was pretty satisfying even if it was a little bit over the top. Yes the movie had pretty long duration of almost 2 hours, but there was no mid or post end credit scene. I read that the film was part of multiple movie deal between Netflix and Amblin Partners (Steven Spielberg's company), so we should be seeing more hopefully entertaining films like this in the future as part of their cooperation.

The film was made interesting due to the convincing performance of Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton's athleticsm and their nice cat and mouse chase. Aside from those names I mentioned, there were few other support cast such as Logan Marshall-Green (LouDark Blue TV series etc) as Agent Alcott from Homeland Security, Dean Norris (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Under the Dome TV series etc) as Ethan's supervisor Sarkowski, Sinqua Walls (American Soul TV series etc) as Jason, Ethan's colleague in TSA, Josh Brener (Max Steel etc) as IT expert Herschel and few others. The director of the movie was Jaume Collet-Serra (Black AdamThe Shallows etc) and written by T. J. Fixman (Ratchet & Clark etc).

From what I read, this movie got favorable reviews by critics and it seemed audience were pretty impressed too. I am quite sure it would be making into the top watched movie soon enough as the film was interesting and enjoyable. Overall to me this was entertaining film due to its intensity and suspense with convincing performance by Jason Bateman and great psychological mind game with Taron Egerton. There were also few surprising twists that I did not see coming. It might not be full action but the ones shown were entertaining, even though there was a bit of illogical part in certain scenes. So if you are interested in seeing an exciting action thriller with attributes that I mentioned, then you could certainly give it a try. As long as you do not mind little sense in some areas, I think you should be enjoying this as well.
