This new movie was just released in Indonesian cinemas today. It actually had an early screening last weekend, but we did not go to see it then. Due to the fasting period, my office working hours was shortened and the good thing about it? I was able to go to cinemas at earlier time. OK, let's get down to the movie now.
Brief Story Line
After the events of the first movie, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz - Flora & Ulysses, House of Lies TV series etc) was now living happily with Tom (James Marsden - The Boss Baby: Family Business, The Alibi etc) and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter - The Haves and the Havenots TV series etc). When the Wachowskis were attending the wedding of Maddie's sister, Rachel (Natasha Rothwell - The White Lotus TV series etc) with Randall (Shemar Moore - S.W.A.T 2017 TV series etc), Sonic was left at home to enjoy his alone time.
However, things gotten extremely chaotic when Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey - The Truman Show, Dumb and Dumber etc) somehow managed to return to earth and accompanied by Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba - The Suicide Squad, Thor: Ragnarok etc) who seemed intent on hurting Sonic. With the help from Tails (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey - Digimon The Movie etc), Sonic had to save themselves from the chase by Robotnik and Knuckles.
So how would the story conclude? Find them all in this exciting and fun adventure movie.
End of Brief Story Line
My wife and I were discussing about the duration of the movie when we saw this and we were surprised to find out it was 122 minutes. Obviously we did not think it would be so long for an adventure comedy movie. But after we finished the film, I did not feel it to be too long, likely because we enjoyed it a lot. Yes, the film was funny and we totally had great time. Not even the lack of manner by the couple across the isle from us (putting their feet on their front seats) was able to ruin our mood.
From the start of the movie, we were already shown the hilarious craziness of Sonic and the warmth of seeing him becoming a family with Tom and Maddie. But when the other characters from Sonic the Hedgehog games appeared, i.e. Knuckles and Tails, the story became even more interesting. Once again, the star of this film to us was Jim Carrey who still managed to give his classic rubber face and those amusing behaviors. He really fit into this character perfectly. Idris Elba was really good as the voice of Knuckles (reminded us with the voice of Optimus Prime of the Transformers), while Colleen O'Shaughnessey had been voicing Tails in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchises, so she definitely had the experience.
The special effects here were still as good as the original movie. In fact, I think they spend more with the additional characters and those scenes during the climax, which would explain the bigger budget compared to the first film. My wife and I were definitely amazed by them. I also loved that they showed those classic actions and more elements of the games now, which should delight fans of the games.
Aside from the amazing voice actors & actress, the live action cast were mostly good. Natasha Rothwell provided some huge laughable moments, supported by Adam Pally (Happy Endings TV series etc) and Lee Majdoub reprising their roles as the gullible Deputy Sheriff Wade and Robotnik's right hand man Agent Stones respectively. However, I personally thought Shemar Moore might not be at his best in here (he probably would fit a serious tough guy better than in comedic role). The film was still directed by Jeff Fowler who I felt did great job.
Overall, this one was very entertaining for me and my wife. We enjoyed the comedy, the adventure, the music and the excited & happy feeling after seeing this movie. It was definitely an enjoyable one and I thought it's better than the original, with more Sonic games characters and the way the story seemed to flow very nicely. Oh and do not miss the mid end credit scene as we believe it is a hint for the next movie. Btw there was no post end credit scene. So if you want to enjoy yourselves for around 2 hours with your whole family (it's classified for all ages in Indonesia), then this would be a good option. You can even reminiscence if you played a lot of this game in the past.
Happy watching!
