Brief Story Line
Cole Turner (Chris Evans - Lightyear, Knives Out etc) was a man who had been working in his parents' farm for years and never even travelled outside the country. But when he met the lively Sadie (Ana de Armas - Blonde, Deep Water etc), Cole immediately fell for her. After a whole day's date that went really well, Cole sadly was ghosted by Sadie.
Encouraged by his family, Cole decided to go after her in London but unfortunately he was mistakenly thought to be a secret agent by group of criminals led by Leveque (Adrien Brody - See How They Run, The Predator etc) and his right hand man Wagner (Mike Moh - Street Fighter: Resurrection series etc).
So what would happen to Cole and Sadie? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
A film that combined the element of adventure and action comedy always interest me and with the addition of secret agent in the mix, it was definitely something that I considered a really fun plot. This time the film cast two people who are well known with Chris Evans in particular due to his portrayal of Captain America in MCU movies and the rising star Ana de Armas. And the early part where they met for the first time was when I felt their chemistry was best. However, as the story progressed it did seem not as convincing as earlier, although it was still interesting to see their behavior.
This kind of premise might not have been the most original which was highlighted by critics who did not appreciate the film at all as they compared it with other similar plot successful movies in the past. For me, it was not the most critical aspect of this movie but rather the action and the comedy. And I thought the actions were quite good even if few times the CGI was a little bit obvious, but in general I was pretty satisfied by them. The fighting was cool enough and the finale was pretty entertaining. And sometimes the humor was quite funny too that it made me chuckled and even laughed out loud (that suitcase was absolutely hilarious). It even raised my wife's curiosity as she heard me did so few times.
Aside from the two lead cast, I was totally not impressed by Adrien Brody whom I thought overdid it as the villain. He is a good actor but this time sadly he seemed to be a miscast and tried too hard at selling himself as a bad guy but really failed. I thought Mike Moh was more suitable as the not too bright killer. In addition to the names I mentioned above, there were few other support characters such as Cole's dad (Tate Donovan - Love Potion No. 9 etc), mom (Amy Sedaris - Boss Baby: Family Business etc), younger sister Mattie (Lizze Broadway - American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules etc) and an agent Marco (Marwan Kenzari - Black Adam etc). There were also some cameos from pretty famous actors in this film that was pretty delightful to see and obviously to add the humorous element.
The movie was directed by Dexter Fletcher (Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman etc) from the screenplay by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick (co-writer of Zombieland, Deadpool etc), Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers (co-writer of The Lego Batman Movie, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle etc). So they were really experienced, but this time their result was not too fruitful. And Fletcher's directing was heavily criticized as well. The film itself has a duration of 117 minutes including closing credit. To my surprise there was no mid or post end credit scenes at all, as I thought they might be interested in making it a new franchise.
Overall to me this one was OK and fun enough with some actions that might not be spectacular but still entertaining and few of those humorous scenes. The chemistry that was not too believable mid way through the movie might have contributed to the lack of total enjoyment for me. However, as an action comedy and adventure, I thought it was still pretty delightful to watch despite few shortcomings. So if you are interested in watching this kind of film with popular stars as the lead cast and some of the attributes I said above, then you are welcome to give it a try.
Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
