(TV SERIES) The Night Agent Season 1 - An Interesting and Fresh Action Thriller Series with Intriguing Story

There were so many new movies and series released on various streaming platforms in the past few weeks and it was very hard to keep up with them. But as I was looking into those new shows, one caught my attention in Netflix since it became number one in Indonesia despite released only a bit over a week. So I decided to watch this one from few days ago and finished it last night. Well I would just get into it then.

Brief Story Line

FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso - The Whole Truth, The Big C TV series etc) was working the night shift "guarding" a phone in the white house that almost never rang. However, one night the phone did ring from a former owner of cyber security company, Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan - The New Legends of Monkey King TV series etc) who was being chased by two assassins Dale (Phoenix Raei - Clickbait mini series etc) and Ellen (Eve Harlow - The Tomorrow Man etc). Peter who was working for president's chief of staff Diane Farr (Hong Chau - The Menu, The Whale etc) tried to help her and was soon caught up in something beyond his wildest imagination.

Meanwhile US Secret Service agent Chelsea Arrington (Fola-Evans Akingbola - Siren TV series etc) whose protective detail was Maddie Redfield (Sarah Desjardins - Impulse TV series etc), Vice President's daughter, was a bit irritated when an older agent Erik Monks (D. B. Woodside - Lucifer TV series etc) was assigned to her team by the director Almora (Enrique Murciano - Without a Trace TV series etc).

As the story progressed, it would be clearer what Peter and Rose were caught in which involved high level conspiracy. So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this series.

End of Brief Story Line

So after finally completing the whole first season, I could understand why it was quite a hit as it was fast paced and pretty suspenseful with some nice action. I personally liked the lead characters Peter and Rose as they got a nice enough chemistry. And the captivating story which involved conspiracy at the high level also got me hooked. This series somehow also reminded me a bit of 24, one of the best series in my opinion probably because it had terror aspect, secret service, president and vice president of US and most likely because we got D. B Woodside who was one of the important character in that series.

The story itself was quite engaging. I found myself to be intrigued of what would happen and the ultimate goal of all that was going on. The revealing of the actual plot was done in an interesting and not boring way. I think I liked this one from the start and gradually enjoyed it more. I was actually quite impressed that the introduction of other characters were done pretty smoothly and the shocks of seeing that there did not seem to be anyone truly safe.

The first season consisted of 10 episodes with duration between 45 minutes to almost an hour which was enjoyable, but it did make me take longer to finish, compared to standard 8 episodes. I only found out that the series was based on a novel after the 10th episode (which was when I watched the closing credit). It was adapted from novel Matthew Quirk's novel of the same title and developed for TV by Shawn Ryan. He had vast experience as he was the co-creator of S.W.A.T 2017 series, Timeless, The Shield and several other TV series in the past. So the show was definitely in good hands.

The cast in general did fine job, especially Gabriel Basso though I did not really remember him. He was quite praised by critics who seem to appreciate the series as well. In addition to the regular cast I mentioned above, there were other people who had recurring roles such as Christopher Shyer as Vice President Redfield, Kari Matchett (Code 8 etc) as President Travers, very familiar face Robert Patrick (Scorpion TV series etc) as deputy director FBI Hawkins and few others. Oh, btw the series was classified for 18+ due to violence, sex, language and substance, but for me the violence was not too extreme and the sex scene was very mild like what you would see in a series for TV.

Overall this series was something that I liked in an action thriller with a story that was intriguing as it focused more on uncovering the major plot. Though it might not have been the most original plot, but the story telling was well done that made us curious and want to know more. Only thing that I wished more was a bit of humor as aside from the character Cisco (Curtis Lum), the tone was a bit serious and the lighter moment was very scarce. From what I read, this one was quickly becoming a success which was why Netflix immediately renew it for second season. It would be really interesting to see what would be in store in subsequent seasons. So if you are looking for a fresh, interesting and quite suspenseful action thriller with some actions, then this one would be a good choice.
