Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - A Very Fun and Entertaining Adventure Movie Based on Popular Role Playing Game

This was the first movie that we saw in theater after my wife and I got back from our holiday trip. It was released just few days ago, so we were not that late in seeing this one. We decided to see the 1 PM show cause we want to have a movie marathon and watch another film after this one. OK, why don't I just get started.

Brief Story Line

Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine - Don't Worry Darling, Wonder Woman 1984 etc) was a thief working together with a group that consisted of his young daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman - Gunpowder Milkshake, Marry Me etc), the barbarian Holga (Michelle Rodriguez - The Fast and Furious movies etc), young sorcerer Simon (Justice Smith - The Voyeours, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom etc) and con-man Forge (Hugh Grant - Operation Fortune: Ruse de GuerreThe Gentlemen etc). They later were joined by the wizard Sofina (Daisy Head - Shadow and Bone TV series, Underworld: Blood Wars etc) who told them about a magical relic that intrigued Edgin. However their heist went wrong and they became separated.

After two years, Edgin and Holga managed to meet with the rest, but something had changed among them. They later decided to continue their search for the relic and recruited a druid named Doric (Sophia Lillis - IT, Gretel and Hansel etc) and subsequently assisted by a paladin named Xenk (Regé-Jean Page - The Gray Man, Mortal Engines etc). As they embarked on this journey, they would face many obstacles that would bring the best out of themselves.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Now that was a really entertaining film! This was an adventure movie at its best. It had the complete element of interesting characters, plenty of cool action involving magic & creatures, challenges to overcome and tons of humor. This kind of fantasy movie always interest me cause we got to see some magic being used to defeat the enemies and the journey was also a pleasure to watch as we were brought into the world of wizardry with various creatures and enemies to defeat.

What made this one to be really good was the way they managed to combine all of those elements perfectly especially the chemistry among the characters. From the charming Edgin who was best friend with the brute Holga, the not too confident sorcerer Simon, and the druid Doric with her amazing ability. All the cast who played these characters were awesome as they were truly convincing in their roles, including obviously Hugh Grant who was perfect in portraying the con-man Forge and Regé-Jean Page who was really suitable playing as the too literal Xenk.

In term of actions, though not the utmost spectacular type but they were well crafted to my opinion, with some fights using swords and of course some magic. The part where Doric went to do some recon was one of the best I had seen. The special effects were wonderful especially the creation of the lifelike creatures which probably was the reason for its pretty big production budget of USD 150 million. But I think with the high appreciation from critics and audiences, this would be a huge success and they would be able to recover it and then some.

The movie did not have a very complicated plot and I think it was quite light which justified the PG-13 rating. There was a bit of twist in the early stage but not that surprising. I do not think there was ever a boring moment as we were continuously shown the fascinating story and there were so many hilarious scenes that would make us laugh out loud (personal favorite was the scene in the cemetery). Oh there was only one mid end credit scene that would make you leave the theater feeling happy. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Game Night, National Lampoon: Vacation) did a wonderful job in directing this movie which they co-wrote together with Michael Gillio.

Btw, if you are unaware, this movie was based on the table-top Role Playing Game titled Dungeons & Dragons originally published by TSR and later Wizards of the Coast subsidiary of Hasbro (with its products such as Transformers, G.I. Joe and many more). There had been a trilogy of movies adaptation in the past but I do not think they were successful enough. Perhaps this would be the start of a new franchise which was definitely something that my wife and I would love to watch. She was even interested in seeing this movie again as she enjoyed it so much that she did not had a single glimpse to her mobile phone.

Overall this was a really entertaining adventure movie that is enjoyable even for people who are not familiar with the game as the theme was quite universal. It would give us laughter, joy and delight at seeing the protagonists completing the challenges and overcoming the obstacles. There was even an emotional moment towards the end, though unsurprising but still a lovely scene nonetheless. We both enjoyed this movie a lot and would recommend those who love this kind of film to see in the theater as it should be with large screen and great sound effect. And do not worry about the long duration of 134 minutes as you would not feel it. So if you have not done so, you are welcome to give this movie a try.

Happy watching!
